RRS is a great company. There are 4 main company's who make similar stuff that you absolutely cannot go wrong with: RRS, Markins, Wimberley, and Kirk. They make tripod heads, camera plates, macro rails, collars, and lots more stuff. Each company has a couple things the others don't offer, or different variations on it so you can choose whatever you like best. I like Markins ballheads and RRS camera plates personally, but you can't go wrong with anything they offer really. Resale value on the stuff they make is excellent as well because it's so expensive new.

The best ballheads run about $350-$450 but last a lifetime and hold their value incredibly well. It's definitely a worthwhile investment if you use them a lot.

Yup, all the stuff about "buying a tripod to last the rest of your life" is true, and it goes for ballheads as well.

I've owned 6 tripods, 3 light cheap ones, 2 decent ones and one great one. Now that I've got a RRS Tripod, I know I'll never need to spend a dime on one again.

I bought the PC-36N and it was a good buy, but looking back I should have at least got the PC-40N. Not that the 36 isn't doing it's job, but with larger lenses in the future I'd probalby appreciate a bigger one.
