    Default RB26dett vs sr20det

    What do you guys think?
RB's are like almost twice the price but can handle up to 600hp
and cost a pretty penny for a swap.

SR is way better price wise and you'll have like 3k$ left over from
what you'd spend on the RB swap to build up the engine.

    what do you guys think?

ideally it would be for a s14 swap if thats even possible.

I think the RB26DETT is worth it. Twib turbos rule

Are we talking about an S13 swap? RB26dett is not the right choice for that swap, You must switch to a single turbo and run a Rb25det transmission to do away with the AWD. Go RB25DET if you want an RB.

Given the choice again I'd go with the SR20DET. Way more stuff available, and easier to find here in North America.

There is a guy in town doing a RB26DETT into his 98 Nissan 240SX. I didn't believe him at first but then he told me he was going to using an RB25 tranny, cutting abit of the rad support and using some sort of Mercedes Radiotor that would moved off to the side a bit to fit the motor. He sounded pretty serious and has ordered quite a few things off me the car. But i'll try and get more info off him to see what's really going on. I'm still quite sceptical.

Yeah, the RB26 in the S13 is a hella lot of work. And work = money.

Well for a minute I will pretend I'm rich .....
I'll throw an RB26dett into my drag car or when I need to go fast in a straight line.
My daily driver/road coarse car will have an SR, as it will have nearly 50/50 weight distribution. And the power potential will be enough to keep me happy... [/dream]

you can pull 600hp out of an SR... just takes some coaxing.
If you wanna be crazy, get a crate motor from Jun or Tomei
but if you go the RB route, you will sacrifice balance of the vehicle though. that is probably about it.
it might not even be that noticeable... but i haven't heard about people's experience in terms of handling in an RB'd 240

rb26dett' s are like 6 grand can, engine only. If you can find one. Sr20det's are like 2 g's for a redtop. If you got a bucket full of money and mechanically inclined, go for it.

Haven't really seen ppl doin it so I think it's gotta be hard. Importfan attempted it, guess they failed.

Dude, if you get the rb26 though you got my props

there are s13 blacktops and red tops
    the differences...
    The Blacktop is newer.
The Blacktop has minor ECU changes.
The Blacktop has minor finishing differences.

    No major differences.

The blacktop is usually about 500 dollars more than the redtop, merely due to the fact that it is newer.
Blacktops were also in the s14 and s15, there are more changes with those as well

Hell's no to an RB26. It'd add a lot of weight, cost a lot of money, and if anything ever broke you'd have to overnight parts from japan (mucho cash). If I were going to do an RB of any kind, it'd be the RB25DET, easier to install, and a bit more common.

An SR20 would be a better choice that's for sure. It's fairly common, it can put out as much power as you'd every need. The reliability is right up there, and it shares some parts with other engines available in north america (ie cheap parts). But if you really went all out, it can get really expensive as well. My choice for an SR would be an S13 red or black top engine, with a GT28R turbo from Garrett. With a greddy intake manifold and a JIC exhaust manifold, you'd have over 300hp, that's extremely usable and readily available from 2500rpm up.

But I think the best choice for fun would be the CA18DET. A bit harder to find, but it's dirt cheap, like 800 bucks US. You could just get a spare engine in case anything breaks, it has better valvetrain design, so it can rev higher than the SR. The block is iron, and it has monster connecting rods and pistons. With the same setup as the SR (from above), it could be a really fun car.

everything he said and i'll add that the redtop is now more rarer and it's usually the engine of choice for tuners... don't recall why though. been a long while since i read up on it

they like the redtop because of the superior head design (better flow), which was changed in the S14 and S15 models.

if you want a drag car definately go for the rb 26 or 25, if its a road car you're after i'd suggest the sr20 or even turboing your ka. as far as swapping the rb motors in goes the rb 25 isn't that hard, most ppl blow that out of proportion all you really need is someone who knows their shit and a motor mount kit that can be bought from mckinney motorsports and a few other places. Mckinney even makes one for the rb26 if you choose to go that way and the rb 26 is very doable if mated to the rb25 tranny with the rb25 oil pan. Both rbs will require a shortened driveshaft, you can use your stock one with the correct length measurements and the rb tranny's yoke up front most driveshaft shops should be able to do it. If not the rb engines then sr20 or turbo ka. Turbo ka is more cost effiecent cause you can spend the $4 to 5 g's on buildin up the ka with a mad turbo and honestly lookin at like 300ish horses instead of spending all that money for a bone stock sr20. but whatever you do it's awsome to see a serious 240 around here.

    blacktops aren't 500 bucks more.

    s13 redtop like 1200 us
    s14 blacktop like 2400us
    s15 blacktop like 3500us

the horsepower on the 3 are also different. And the s15 had a 6-speed vs. the normal 5.

    s13 200hp
    s14 225hp
    s15 250hp
