Default Calgary Excessive Noise Bylaw - Open House

I'm sure this is an issue some beyonders are interested in.

    How loud is too loud?

Calgarians will get a chance to let the city know at one of two excessive vehicle noise open houses.

The open houses will give residents a chance to discuss with city staff, get information on current legislation, listen to calibrated sound levels, watch a video of noise-monitoring technology, and fill in a survey, said Bill Bruce, director of animal and bylaw services.

The open houses will be held at the following dates, locations and times:

    • Wednesday, April 6. 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Scenic Acres School main gymnasium. 50 Scurfield Way N.W.

    • Thursday, April 7. 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Wildwood School main gymnasium. 120-45 Street S.W.

The open houses will focus on excessive noise from all types of vehicles, vehicles with modified mufflers, and those in need of repair.

A report is due back to council on May 18 that includes a definition on excessive vehicle noise, penalties, noise enforcement options, a cost estimate for the technology and any provincial and federal legislative constraints.

More information can be obtained online or by calling 311
I'm still not sure how they will be able to enforce this

If you feel the laws are too strict, make sure you get there and be heard. I remember my community had a meeting about it and my parents and I went, the only people who showed up were the whiners who wanted to ban bikes, aftermarket exhausts, dogs, teenagers, music etc. I left that night so pissed off.

Put one cop on 17th Ave on a warm day with a dB meter.

Guarantee he will fill his monthly quota that day.

We need some people to go and be heard, otherwise it'll just be all the NIMBY pricks whining all night, and getting their way. They put speedbumps in my neighborhood, I don't want this crap as well.

Same way they do it in Edmonton already. Hear a loud exhaust, pull the vehicle over, bust out the decibel meter, and fine the driver.

Gotta say, I'm a little torn on this one. I like nice sounding loud exhaust, but I don't like ANY loud exhaust at 3am ripping around my neighborhood. It's those "bad apples" that fucks it for everyone.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Would this excessive noise bylaw always be in effect, or only after a certain time like other noise bylaws? What would the limit be, because there are some OEM exhausts, especially bikes, that are much louder than my aftermarket one. Would they not count?

They could combine these noise checks with drunk driving tests. A one stop check stop.

how about those 'guys' on harleys and chopper who just cruise up and down 17th ave all night long in the summer?

It bothers me when I'm sitting on the patio with some friends and every five minutes we can't hear each other talk. And then, you see the same guys cruise by again and again.

    fucking fags...

Have it only apply between 10PM and 10AM, give the people ticket the option of either fixing it or paying. Have the ticket price go up each time you get caught. Start at say $150 and go up $100 each time.

If you want a perfect example of why this is needed go to Bridlewood area after 11PM and listen to the little faggy children ripping around.

wonder if this would apply to those Prattco asshats who dig holes and backfill at 5:30 AM on a Saturday or Sunday mornign with their cats/loaders and cranes that make a continuous beep when backing up every couple seconds.

I will be attending and encouraging them to target common areas such as 17th ave., high schools, and universities.

Anyone wanna take bets on the number of "I got a bullshit noise ticket, how do I fight this?" threads if this comes through?

I'll take the over on 50. I'll also be that 99% of them will be deserved and the OP will be some kid who hacked his exhaust to make it "hella sick".

I don't understand how you put limits on the ricers but allow Harleys, semi trucks and big diesel trucks get away with it.

Can they do that? Bikes like Harleys are louder than even the loudest aftermarket car exhausts so what are they going to do ban bikes? Not really fair to ticket just drivers of cars.

IMO some people really need to realize while they may own a section of land that doesn't mean they should be able to control everything in the surrounding area. It's starting to get a little too socialist being told you can't do this, can't do that, etc.

That's illegal, call bylaw, they will be over there faster than a fat kid on a smarty.

It's all about being considerate to your neighbors. Didn't your mother teach you "don't be a jerk".

If bikers want to pop their tiny little boners over making some noise they can do it out in the country, instead of revving those piece of shit engines in high density residential neighborhoods.

I'd be all for the noise bylaw if they get rid of the fucking widening of the exhaust tickets.
