math problem

Three guys end up in a small town at night and decide to get a motel room. The room is $30 bucks a night.
After talking with the owner and giving him $30.00 or ten bucks each for the room, the owner feels bad for charging them the full price.
He decides to give back $5.00
On way he decides only to give back $3.00 and keep $2.00

So the three guys spend 9 dollars each on the room.

so 9x3= 27
owner keeps $2.00

so 27 + 2 = 29

what happened to that dollar???

Uhh what? Ignore the 5, it doesn't enter the equation. So he has 30, gives 3 back. Each has paid $9 (27/3), which is what the owner has... Each got $1 back. 27 + 3 = 30.

This doesn't make sense, there is no problem here at all.

Owner takes $30, gives back $3. Each person gets $1 back.

Owner now has $27, and each person paid $9 for the room instead of $10.
