How is it twice as fast?
Running GIMP on it would be like trying to use iBooks on a computer: it's a crappy user experience. Also, not sure it would work, considering Android is built for an ARM CPU, not X86Originally posted by Mar
Once some competition drives the price down this will be sweet. Is the operating system open to install something like GIMP on it?

How would it be a bad user experience? And it's open source so you can just recompile the source code for your architecture, I think someone ported it.Originally posted by nich148_9

Jesus man, I know you like Transformers, but you need to get out more. No one should get this upset over a movie based on children's toys.
Interesting but the Zoom is running at a higher resolution.
Is it double the resolution? No it's like 10-15% higher so add that to xoom scores and its still slow

Honeycomb is still very new and not optimized well, pretty sure it will improve. The Tegra 2 is no slouch. Either way it would not convince me to not get an Android tablet.

For real? Who gives a shit about the GPU in a tablet? The iPad2 has a 1.2 gib processor and the Xoom has been very successfully overclocked to 1.5 gibs. The XOOM also has double the RAM that the iPad2 does. Apple disappoints again.

A finger is about 45 x 45 px of touch area. The toolbar buttons and controls in GIMP are about half on both sides.Originally posted by Mar

People who play games, use photo apps, read graphics-intensive websites and watch a lot of video probably care about the GPU. You're also comparing a non-stock Xoom to a stock iPad for the CPU.Originally posted by Mar

The Xoom lacks an IPS display, so it's really hard to read the opposite side when in landscape mode (in portrait mode, it's nearly impossible). It also uses a much wider aspect ratio, which means it's better for watching videos, but worse for using in portrait (to read a book, browse the web, etc.). It's also heavier than an iPad 2, which makes it worse for casual, non-desk use.
The Xoom isn't a bad tablet though.

How would it affect photo applications and graphics intensive websites? These are static photos and the Xoom has a higher resolution than the iPad2 so it would be better, no? The GPU, as far as I understand it, only matters under load, like heavy animation.

Maybe you are thinking cartoon animation
On the ipad "animation" consists of many things:
-page scrolling
-zooming
-photo zooming & browsing
-rotating screen
-sweeping homescreens
etc the list goes on my friend

As for photo applications and websites, iOS uses animation extensively, and prioritizes "feel" over rendering (when scrolling on an original iPhone, the website would move with the finger, but take a moment to properly render; a more powerful GPU allows it to do both). The Xoom has a higher resolution, but a worse GPU, so it gets a worse frame rate for animations throughout.
Which are all smooth on Honeycomb and Tegra 2 to be fair. Played with one at Best Buy yesterday, was really impressed. Still to expensive though. Those benchmarks are not necessarily representative of day to day performance. I am quite sure you will see significant improvements in future updates of Honeycomb anyway.Originally posted by bart

Competition is definitely heating up in the Android tablet market. With so many Android tablets coming to market, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a price war in a few months.Originally posted by ZEDGE
Thats why the ASUS one at $399 seems more appealing. Plus IPS display.
Or this one:

The flood gates are about to open on Honeycomb powered Android tablets as there are many more coming from Viewsonic, Samsung, Toshiba, etc.
What's funny is I keep getting the impression all these companies are out to take out the iPad 2 more than they are each other hahaOriginally posted by 2000impreza

Two reasons why the Ipad will never be as good as xoom.
1) linux OS
2) flash
hey any updates iceberg? how you liking it after one month?

I had playbook but returned it and went back to ipad 2. Main thing going for playbook was the multitasking and size but aside from that there was some things on it that drove me nuts that ipad has.
