    Default House construction question

    Hey Beyond,

I am building a new home and the other day I went to see how it is progressing. I took some pictures of something I thought was weird. It appears if the rear portion of the roof and truss assembly has been cut out or something like that. Here are the pictures.

Is this normal or did they oops on something?

looks like a Opps something. My roof was assembled on the ground, and then lifted into place. never seen anything like that before, I could be wrong.

Did you pay for a full roof?

I've never seen a truss like that before. Looks to me like something either didn't fit properly and had to be cut or wrong materials were bought.

Either way, they will obviously try to patch it afterwards, but depending on how that is done the strength of the roof in that area could be compromised.

I'd talk with your builder and find out what's going on.

It's hard to tell but that one truss that is running perpendicular to the main trusses looks like I might be a girder truss. The other side of the girder truss looks like there's going to be another roof. Same concept as the front elevation. Just out of curiosity, is that a Shane Home?

Looks like the gable was fucked up, nothing to worry about they just stick frame the rest of the gable. Assuming there's nothing going on in the back, lbut like mentioned above you can't tell without pictures of the back.

So I feel a little stupid. I had a closer look at my blueprints and it seems that my model with the particular elevation for the corner unit has a small peak in the back kinda like the front. So I think that must be the joint area. Good call Frozenrice. I did talk to the builder but got the usual response of "it's still under construction and that part wasn't done yet". So that's why I posted here for information. Yes, it is a Shane home and it's in the Panorama area. So I think everything is ok now. Next time I will study my blueprints better before making an idiot of myself.

Why didn't you just ask the framer that was working on your house at the time? Isn't it a lot more effort to start a thread you have to check on and go to the builder?

Don't feel stupid. You will feel way stupider to not say anything then find out it is indeed a screw-up later. A home is a large investment, you have every right to make sure that it is done correctly. Keep an eye on it first and don't try to make a huge fuss.

We can't just walk on site and ask. If we don't have prior permission and hardhats they would just throw us off the property with a fine. So we asked our selling agent as he said that all questions should be directed to him. He forwarded our concern to the project manager but I still got the "hey your stupid so don't worry about it" answer.

Every company is a bit different, but the main concern is safety. You wouldn't believe how many customers have injured themselves on the job site. Everything from stepping on nails to falling through the stairwell opening into the basement.

go in the evening and walk through taking pictures of everything you are unsure of.

I have found a ton of stuff that was done wrong when I did our house (during the boom mind you).

The economy has changed, builders NEED your business, if you aren't happy or confident in what is happening then you need to turn your asshole feature on. They will get away with only what you allow them to.

That being said I found that a case of budwiser goes a long way with the trades. I got all my gas lines upgraded, hot water line run to the yard and other stuff all for a few cases of beer.

Funny how it works if you offered them $40 to do it they would tell you to screw off, but a $30 case of beer goes a long way.

I've had customers come into the house with little kids in tow. Running around, tripping over extension cords, picking up sharp pieces of broken tile. It's annoying as hell. They get in the way, slow you down, and generally get all upset about things that aren't their concern. Most tradespeople don't need to be babysat or their every moved watched to make sure they don't make a mistake. That's what the general contractor, site super and liaison is for. If you can't trust them to be professional, then don't choose them in the first place. Customers coming onto the site every other day only slows things down and adds to confusion and headaches. And most of the time customers only THINK they see a problem.

I've had customers come in telling me "its the wrong tile...that's not the colour grout we picked...I thought this tile went THERE..." When most of the time they can't even remember what was picked 9 months earlier, and they're in fact wrong with their presumptions.

I can go on site but I have too go to the sales office and make an appointment. Then we get hard hats and go over to the site. There someone will guide us around the house and I guess answer our questions. It's all about insurance and covering their ass but this is understandable. I will make an appointment to go through when all the woodwork, electrical and plumbing is done but before they drywall. I just have to trust that when the inspector goes through it he will be thorough.

Im guessing your dealing with Claude and Max? (im building in the area with Shane as well) You dont have to make an appointment at all to go to the site. All you have to do (and i've done this in front of Max... hell he even told me to do this) and walk in, go over to the pedestal where the lot map is and open the top left drawer. In there is a book where you sign in/out and in that drawer theres some hard hat liners. Below that drawer in the lower cabinet are the hard hats.

As long as you sign in/out and get the proper safety equipment you can go onto site yourself without someone there escorting you around.

When they are done the framing and the electrical they'll give you a call and ask you to meet up with the site manager (Paul probably) and he'll walk through the whole house with you with the plan and make sure your happy with where everything is... only then they will start drywalling.
