Edmonton is disgusting

Former gameshow host Bob Barker continues to criticize Edmonton over its decision to keep Lucy the elephant at the Edmonton Valley Zoo.

His remarks come as he tries to convince officials in Ontario to move three elephants at the Toronto Zoo to a sanctuary in California or Tennessee.

Barker has some harsh words for Edmonton city council and Mayor Stephen Mandel.

"I have never been so unfortunate as to have to deal with people like the government of Edmonton," he says. "Now I don't know whether he [Stephen Mandel] is a complete dictator or what, but it would seem to me that someone in the council would have the courage to say 'this is terrible what we're doing to this elephant."

Just weeks ago the city decided it would not ship Lucy south, or bring in an outside veterinarian to examine her.


"Edmonton is disgusting," Barker says. "Edmonton is an embarrassment to Canada. I might add that Los Angeles Zoo is an embarrassment to us too. But Edmonton? They don't care a thing about that elephant, it seems. They won't even let experts come in and try and cure her. They'd rather let her suffer out there."

I've lived in Calgary for a few years now and to be honest Edmonton and Calgary seem to be too very similar cities.

BUT I have only gone up to Edmonton for day trips I have not spent a significant amount of time there.

Compare Calgary and Edmonton to every other major city in North America and they are as close to being the same as possible. Both are full of the same redneck population in the same part of the world..

Pretty much.

Edmonton = Calgary = Regina = Saskatoon = Winnipeg... when you get down to it. Smallish cities (Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg are decent sized, but nothing special) in the middle of nowhere with nothing really around them. And not a ton to do. Nothing makes any of these places stand out. We have short summers and long cold winters. We have no major tourist attractions (we have the Indy and the mall, Calgary has Stampede) nothing major drawing people to the cities except oil.

Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal... those are real, big cities.

Prairie cities? Nothing special, IMO.

I'm from MTL. And between MTL and any other major cities there are a huge differences (not only language). Personally I don't see any MAJOR differences between Calgary and Edmonton. But I have heard through the grapevine 80% of the time Edmonton roads are all construction.
