Because they are much, much, much older. When Calgary is that old it will be much more settled and have more of an identity. Both Edmonton and Calgary are boom towns.. there is barely any time for them to settle.

And for the record I don't think Edmonton is disgusting. I kinda like it actually, although I have not spent more than two days at a time there.
The people around Quebec City are basically rednecks so that's why they lean Conservative. The ones in the city that vote Conservative like their government jobs but can't make their federalist vote for the Liberals.

Outside of Montreal and Quebec City Kaybeckers and Albertans have more in common than either would like to admit.

Somehow I doubt that will be case. Everything in Calgary is built cheap and crappy. Not to mention with the amount of sprawl in the development of the city you can forget about ever getting any decent areas developed with historical significance and culture. Culture is something that simply doesn't exist in Alberta.

Well hopefully Mayor Nenshi can help turn this around. He loves cities.

    And this recent article.

People so quickly dismiss the Stampede as being one of the largest cultural events on the continent. Even bigger than Bonhomme Carnival's...Carnival. Both involve lots of drinking and sex surrounded by something cheesy and annoying to locals but fun and quirky for visitors (and kids).

Yea as much as we hate it, people from out of town/country love it. They come in the tens of thousands for Stampeded from all over the world. Having worked at the Airport for many years in the car rental business, Stampede time was crazy busy.

Really? Edmonton and Calgary have no identity? 300 years isn't long enough for Edmonton?

I grew up in Edmonton, and I moved to Calgary 15 years Ago for work. Both cities are far more alike than different. All things considered, they're pretty much interchangeable. neither is particularly amazing, or distinctive in any real way.

I have been there on and off over the past five years for work. I will say that the summers are nice, but the actual city itself? Terrible. Just my opinion.

Or better yet, ask the hockey players that don't want to play there

As opposed to Calgary, who shuts down at 6 and doesn't open on Sundays?

    Fuck Bob Barker.

He's no different than any other "TV star" that wants to save the world, yet lives in a 42 room mansion.

Not even taking the actual cities themselves into consideration, Edmonton is shittier than Calgary because we drive 1 hr west and we are in the mountains, they drive 1 hr west and are...well nowhere.
