This is why I'm not getting a gateway! (That and I only have 1 tv in the entire house)

    EDIT:
Just got off the phone with my sister (who works at shaw). I guess their having issues adding the packages right now? either way, I had some HD channels added, and told her to hook me up with the broadband 100. I guess I will need a new modem as well (I have the blue one), and I specifically told her I want the non-wifi one. And I think it will be courier'd to me, so I'm pretty freaking stoked.

I tend to do ~1TB/mo so the new packages with that "bump up program" aren't so hot...

How do you ever get around to actually watching what you download?

My problem is all these really cheap games from steam. Dragon Age Awakening is over 24GB, and only cost $10 during the sale...

Sure. We all have the occasional large download.

However it isn't like you are downloading that much 40 times every month.

Maybe he has ocd and likes a clean install every time he plays
I will be switching over I suppose once my plan is off the student plan, then I can experience these insane speeds and very adequate bandwidth limits.

with these 100mb lines that would equate to about 12megs/second transfer rate. How many sites can actually provide that anyways? I notice even with extreme not many sites can max out the connection, besides the private torrents I use can usually get a good 2.5m down.

It's not about how many sites can pull down 100mbit. It's so you can download at huge speeds and still watch HD netflix at the same time, while a bunch of ppl are at the house playing multiplayer games on xbox live.

Went to Shaw yesterday.. was that ever convenient! I got to keep the modem I had already, she just jotted down the serial number. Not counting the time spent waiting in line I was in and out in about 5 minutes and she gave me a coax cable for free because I didn't have one.. Went home, plugged the modem in and it worked instantly.

Speedtest.net showed 9.5mb/s down, 2.25mb/s up tested at 6pm .. plenty good enough for me. Should I be able to get better download rates with Extreme though? I imagine the down number will fluctuate a lot depending on time of day.

The Shaw tech just left, all is well. It seems my anti virus was slowing things down greatly. The tech did not call to let me know he was on his way, as every other tech has done, also he was ten minutes from arriving outside the service window appointed time.

    Rant:
On a side note, I have had three SHAW techs into my house in the last 18 months, all asked to use the toilet. I have been in many home service/delivery type positions, I would never in a million years ask to use a customer's toilet. I say sure, whatever go ahead but am thinking.... WTF you just got here, passed a dozen public/business places (had a coffee break no doubt as well) you can take a piss in, and you do it in my place? And further, WTF... put the seat back down as my wife will fucking blame me. Rant over....

Double with Extreme on the download, upload about the same. I never get over 25mb/s on the download, the top norm is about 21ish.

I figured that since I was in a condo building in Arbour Lake that was bringing my download rates down. As far as I know I have the proper modem for Extreme (blue Motorola) and right now its connected directly to my laptop. Is Shaw affected by traffic so much that it would bring me down to less than 50% advertised speed?

I don't mind what its at now because its still faster than what I had at my parent's place (telus whopping 300kb/s for $50/month! fuck those guys) and I think $30/month is a good deal for the speed but you know..

Your speeds are unacceptable (assuming you do indeed have Extreme) in my opinion. Call Shaw, have a tech come out as it could be a dozen things causing issues. Worth the service call, I bet they get you up to the proper speeds.

With newsgroups you can easily max out the 100mb download speeds, and I'm sure you'll be able to cap their 250mb plan when it comes out too.

Ok maybe 1TB is a heavy month I have automated and remote queuing setup for newsies and trackers. I spend a lot of time on the road so I stream out, or stream in when I'm at home. I also backup my fileservers offsite and backup several other servers to mine. Hard drives are cheap these days
