Default Shaw Gateway - Soft Launch

    http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/show...130143&page=10

    Terminology / Description:

Gateway = The central hub "Brain". Not sold separately, is not a standalone HD-PVR unit. The Gateway is typically installed maybe in a Basement or where the Cable enters the home. It contains the actual Hard Drive to make the system work. This communicates with the Total Home Portals through MoCA (Multimedia over Coaxial Alliance) technology.
Total Home Portal = The HD units that would connect to a TV in the home. These units are fanless and you need one of these to connect to the Gateway.

    Cost Billing Clarification:
Gateway + 1 Portal = $598 or Easy Own option of $17/month over 36 months
Additional Portals = $178 or Easy Own option of $5/month over 36 months
Easy Own option is not a rent to own option - you own it right away

    Warranty:
3 Year warranty offered on Gateway and Portal equipment

    PVR Swap/ Trade Program Options:
Customers can do a 1:1 Swap of their current Owned HDPVR for 1 Total Home Portal. Available on additional Portals only (N/A on the $598 Gateway + 1 Portal)
Customers who own a Gateway and Total Home Portal can trade in up to 3 Shaw PVR's for additional portals. Only the following Boxes are eligible for the Trade up program:

DCT 3080 - Motorola Standard Definition PVR
    DCT 6208 - Motorola HDPVR
    DCT 6412 - Motorola HDPVR
    DCT 6416 - Motorola HDPVR
    DCT 3416 - Motorola HDPVR
    DCT 3400 - Motorola HDPVR
    Pace Tahoe HDPVR
    Pace Aspen HDPVR
    Pace Whistler HDPVR
    Pace Summit+Expander HDPVR

Existing Equipment in the Home Compatibility:
Customers can continue to use any Shaw equipment they have in the home in conjunction with the Gateway. However, legacy equipment will not connect/communicate with the Gateway but will work independent as before.

Interesting, I just switched to Telus a couple weeks ago, but am not happy with the fact I can only get 1 HD stream right now. I switched from Shaw because their technology was ancient and I wanted PVR access on two tvs without having the buy another standalone PVR.

Perhaps I'll be switching back as soon as I can see it in action and get a look at the software the drives it. Assuming they increase the internet speed in my area, it was overloaded, don't see how this will work unless they upgrade that.

Installation times will take roughly 4 hours as new a higher frequency filter is installed & as well as some lines may need to be replaced. Be sure to have time set aside for installation as this is done by a senior technician and Shaw does not have many in Calgary.

I've played with it hands on and so far, the UI is definitely a huge upgrade. Keep in mind that this is a soft launch and it is limited to customers. You cannot pick this up at retail or at a 3rd party retailer. Staff has already done a test and most kinks have been worked out.

As for the trade in of this:
DCT 3080 - Motorola Standard Definition PVR

It has not been confirmed 100% that this can be a trade in for a "portal". The swaps are only for HD PVR's and not SD PVR's. I will confirm once I get back into work

GUI looks inferior to Optik TV but I guess Shaw may have better skins.

So Shaw will combine my cable modem, phone terminal and PVR into 1 device and I have to PAY them $600 for the privilege of saving them $?

And if this is cablecard base, when will Shaw be supporting cablecard tuners for PC? Damn, that would be sweet.

This brings up the issue of UBB again.

Is Shaw able to separate the streams incoming to the ARRIS device?

The modem & phone terminal are currently disabled until further testing is put into place. The option will be available in the near future.

Does sound pretty sweet, love my optik right now, but with time might switch once this proves capable.

The article states "fibre ready" places...so new communities only it appears

Yes, Gateway streams have no impact on your Internet usage.

The Gateway is available to all customers in markets where it has launched, not just fibre-fed communities.

I've had Gateway set up in my home for the past few months - if there are any questions about it I'll certainly try my best to share my perspective on it.

Any videos of what it looks like interface wise? Is the Arris video above accurate?

I don't have any videos to share but yes, the above Arris video is more or less what the interface looks like.

I just called shaw and I am getting it next week. This looks 10x better than using this shitty HDPVR box i have now. I hate not being able to delete more than one recording at a time.

I have the original Pace box and it can delete multiple things at once, are you sure you don't have a "PVR Cleanup" option in the pvr menu?

Will this work if I am in a condo building or or only for homes? I would love to have more than 2 tuners.

From what I can read from digital home, all you need is coax cable to the gateway.

I don't think this gateway device operates on IP (Telus optik is IP based) so the bandwidth used for TV is different from the bandwidth used for internet.

So what do you do with the DCX3200 / 3400 ones?

Are those used as Portals then (I would figure, since they are full MoCa capable)?

All installations have been delayed till May 19th. Shaw has currently ran into some installation issues that need to be worked out.

As of right now, the 3200 & 3400 are not compatible. You can trade in your 3400 for a portal but you will still need the Gateway & portal to start off with.

That quite possibly is the WORST news about this new thing i have heard.

They could just enable MoCa on the DCX units.. then Woo, Multiroom capable!.. but no, we like being the losers of the technology races.
