    Default Anyone know about Orchids?

So my GF likes Orchids and her birthday is coming up. The problem is I know absolutely nothing about Orchids. I was thinking about getting her one as part of her present, but won't bother if they suck.

I imagine it would just sit in her room by the window.

Do they make good presents? (i.e. do they last a while without a ton of attention?)

Are certain kinds better or more robust than others for indoor Calgary climates? I read they do well with indirect light so that sounds pretty good.

Where is a good place to get one in Calgary?

I've started googling them but if someone here knows what the deal with Orchids is and could save me some time that would be appreciated!

    Thanks.

The only thing I know about orchids is you are never to touch them (the flower part). Other than that, I would try to find a specific Calgary orchid grower - As-in, specific to our climate - someone like this http://www.paramountorchids.com/Main.html

We have a few orchids in our house...

    - Indirect sunlight
    - water with orchid food once every 8 days BUT if soil is still damp then wait a few more days
    - Loves humidity so take into bathroom when showering

    Pretty simple

Honestly our last 3 orchids have been from Safeway Home Depot and they turn out really nice and colorful.

Orchid food can be picked up at either store as well

Edit: DO NOT drown your orchid in water. Just enough to get the soil damp.

Orchids are a bit more finicky than most house plants.

Sweet thanks guys. I think i'll just grab one from home depot or whatever with some plant food and if it dies it won't be that big of a deal.

They bloom a VERY long time, I had one in bloom for three months or so once.

Try to choose one that not all the flowers are open on if you can. I have seen some very nice ones at Home Depot but I have also seen crap ones because I don't think they take care of them properly. I will tell you T&T usually has very nice orchids (near the produce dept) and are reasonably priced as well, I have bought a couple here. They seem to rotate their stock a bit more and the plants look fresher vs. Home Depot.

Most will be planted in moss-let the moss dry out between waterings, then soak the moss, let drain and leave until it drys out again. Try not to get the crown of the plant (where all the leaves meet or attach to the stem wet) or it can rot. Do not replant into dirt-must be planted in moss or orchid bark-plant should not need repotted for a long time.

When the bloom is done cut off the stem below the first flower and leave it. It is VERY hard to get these to re-bloom and so far I have only been successful once. Orchids like lots of indirect light, and want to be warm. Do not place near a window, door etc...

Anyhow that is the little bit I have learned, have three of them now but still working on whatever the trick is to re-blooming them.

Orchids are the floral phallic symbol representing the vagina.

(The male symbol is the anthurium)
