Default Harper pledges $30M to Ukraine at G8 get together

We pay fucked up tax levels on everything. Our "hard earned" cash is taxed at every corner, every chance the government can.

If Harper said to me, "Hey, we have $30 million collecting dust here. Should we spend it locally or send it to the Ukraine?" I'd say spend it locally. There's no shortage of funding needs across THIS country. Canadian families, jobs, natural disaster relief, etc.

    "Stephen Harper - He's an a'hole".

IIRC Canada has 25 million or so taxpayers... Frankly, I'm totally OK with a whopping ~$1.20 of my personal tax dollars going toward a long-term solution for the Chernobyl wreck.

There's nothing wrong with helping out our allies and maintaining good relationships. There may be a day when Canada needs help and they'll be there to help us out.

Canada is only contributing 4% of total cost.

Love to see how much $ we have to send to Japan although I know Japan will probably be to proud to take it.

It's funny in these threads how people like to give their opinion as to whether they would like the money given or not.
In the end, the people that are 'for' giving money away will always win, because neither side has a say.
Seems odd to me to even have the discussion, as if it mattered whether we wanted to send our paycheck to the ukraine or not.

It's like having a focus group of people who have been forced out of their cars at gun point sit around and discuss whether they were happy with their decision to get out of the car or not.

As for whether the cause was good or not, it really doesn't matter what the thief spends your money after it's stolen.

Not really, we just considered a cooler than normal winter and had a country-wide hockey tournament. The pussies down south went to mehico.

No biggie. I heard that China is going to bailout Portugal to the tune of a half billion or so.

By buying bonds at their current rate, and be willing to risk a default (noone in their right mind would invest in Greece right now, but Portugal still has an outside chance of avoiding financial disaster)

Its not like China has a choice, they are cash heavy from US$ debt and they need to put it somewhere.

Canada is not really cash heavy, we are very dollar strong right now. So $30 million CDN goes a long way.

I'm glad our government doesn't share your selfish attitude.

Imagine what sort of image Canada would develop if the other G8 nations pledged over $700 million, while we decide we would rather spend $30 million on ourselves.

    Grow up.

Compare our foreign support dollars to GDP, as a % in the 80's and now.

    It's embarassing.

This guy's apathy makes me sad.

Hopefully one day the general population will actually give a fuck about what the government does, and hold them to account.

EDIT: How does the side who is in favor of giving the money always win? what if Harper decided to contribute nothing?

Your analogy sucks. For most Canadians, and from the looks of it, many people in this thread, foreign aid is an important part of our role in the international community. I'd be willing to bet you just about anything that the majority of Canadians would support a whopping $1.20 of their taxes go towards a cause such as this.

Your sig is ironic by the way.

Same here, but the left wing socialists can't stand it for some ironically hypocritical reason

    You go, lefties.

I am fully comfortable with this small monetary donation on behalf of ALL taxpaying Canadians. We should all take solace knowing that it will be put toward one of the most noble causes in the modern world; ensuring the safekeeping of mankind's greatest disaster.

Not to mention its over 4 years. I don't think 30 cents per year is asking too much.

You can pretty much guarantee that anything the Harper Government does in the next 4 years, good or bad, will be criticized by the lefties. Sour grapes.
