    Default CUPW Letter carrier strike

Well 72hrs has been given... Wifey brought home some paperwork, her pass to cross the picket line, some of the EI forms if she's to be laid off etc...

Want to know how spoiled the letter carriers are?

Here's the 3 sticking points driving the old posties to strike...

CPC has decided to no longer allow accumulating of sick days (Her depot's average accumulated - 203 days; per postie!) Plans to pay out in $$$ - not allowed to accumulate further. damn I wish I could get sick days, let alone accumulate a years worth

Short term Disability - Only pays 85% Long Term Disability - Only pays 85% - Union of course wants 100% of income for both - including average "OT". So they want it like WCB where CPC tops up to normal wages while 'off'.

Fawk me; I need a job as a letter carrier...

I don't think I've heard of unused sick days carrying forward. That's pretty ridiculous.

So this strike is just for the people that walk around delivering mail?

I wouldn't go that far... in order to take said "7 weeks" of vacation, you MUST have someone lined up that can cover your shift. The mail isn't something that can just get "put off" so to speak. I have a friend who races, and every time he wants to take 2 days off he has to fight for months in advance to get those days... I think it's partially because there is a vacation seniority thing as well (seniority gets to pick vacation days first).

Sure, I suspect that it's not easy for every person to take 7 weeks off a year. But I suspect that, at the very least, they have the option of having unused amounts paid out.

I wonder how much of an impact having no mail carriers would have anymore. I can't think of the last time that I used the mail; seems like most things are either courier or online.

Well the fact remains: You get 7 weeks of vacation. You might not get the exact days you want off, but you will get 7 weeks of vacation.

Wow between all the vacation and sick days, that explains why my mail takes forever to arrive.

How about just give them the ability to take their vacation without having to find someone else to cover their route?

Aka, Contractors for those with vacation, or Hire more people.

I can recall the days when a postal strike was a real concern, but now it has no impact on my life. I cannot recall since the 90's getting anything in the mail worth looking at or something I could not get online.

I turned down a Canada Post job a few years back, on the non union end of the diaper. The people working there (non union) were terrific, they sadly had agreed to a four year contract which was so one sided (Canada Post) only a fool, drunk or both would agree to work there. The vacation issues were so awful, I would have had to find a replacement for my route, train the guy and be certain it was all going to work out perfectly. Oh and supply the vehicle, fuel was reimbursed at 2001 pump prices in 2008. Plenty of pity for the people busting their can for an idiotic march up the mountain. Fuck that, a march to Moscow in the dead of winter would be more pleasurable.

Get a nipple on the tit at Canada Post and never let go.

Home and business mail delivery is as outdated as a landline phone in your home. You do not need it to function very well in life. Fuck Canada Post and the horse they rode in on.

The letter carriers (the ones who actually walk routes) don't have to arrange anything for their vacation... Just bid for the days off... There's tons of replacements for them...

RSMC's like my wife - they have to arrange coverage (though not so hard, there are contractors, its just making sure one is available) But she only gets 3 weeks...

Supermailboxes should still get filled - as long as the mail gets to the depots; but if it runs any length of time; and mail isn't getting sorted or machines break...
