Default Review: Macleod Sushi & Bbq Inc.

Went there yesterday. It's a new AYCE sushi place. (the old Boyd's seafood restaurant, next to the Transcanada xxx video store, and the hobby shop there)

5211 Macleod Trail SW. Calgary, AB

It's only their 3-4th day in business... you can taste the freshness of the new reno. (i.e. fresh cut pine panels, etc... it's an aqquired taste)

Completely transformed from the old Boyd's (i.e. not one of those cheap reno's where they splash some paint, new $100 counter laminate top, change a mirror in the bathroom and call it brand new)

Pretty much entire restaurant has the booth style feel as every table was divided by those pile board panels like in most Japanese restaurants... Seating is quite tight if you're over 6' as each table has these huge korean style bbq on the bottom.

Food was clean, fresh, fills your stomach for AYCE. Service was very welcoming, friendly staff that comes check up on your next order, it's still new so IMHO, I don't think it'll play those AYCE games for another 10-16 months. (i.e. takes forever, don't give you new order sheet hoping you'd just stop eating, etc...)

The only thing that they'll guilt you on (and I don't eat AYCE in Calgary that much) is that for the sashmi, they have 3 choices: Salmon, Tune, Spicy seafood... well, every person is only allowed to order ONE choice per turn (each 'turn" has 3 pieces of the same style)... so it's not like you'll make like 5 turns of only ordering sashmi (does anyone do that???)

    Price: AYCE: $23.95+ drinks+tax

Service: I'd say go try them out quick while they're still gung-ho being brand new, running on investors capital (*disclaimer: I don't know how they're funded)

Menu: Not as much as what I've experienced in Richmond, BC... or Richmich Hill, ON (Ontario ones being full blown buffet with AYCE ordering; for the same price)... I'd say menu size/stuff comparable to Sushi Ichiban few blocks North down the street... But these guys have Korean (style) bbq stuff on the menu too.

my family and i tried this place earlier and i was really impressed!

the service was excellent. the server said that they've only been open since last wednesday so they're still excited about providing excellent customer service.

the food, itself, was ok but i'm comparing 'vancouver sushi' with sushi in calgary so my opinion is always skewed, lol.

bottom line is that i was impressed and i do hope that they stay in business.

Yes there is Toro on the menu. Decent too!

    Went there on Monday...
Sushi pieces arent huge, but when they are AYCE it really doesnt matter. I feel it was good quality for being an AYCE place.. maybe not as good as a regular sushi place, but then again my bill is easily 2-3 times the price.
We had a little bit of the BBQ stuff, but I didnt like that as much. Chicken was Ok, Lamb was Ok, Beef was pretty good. Oh and the Jello and Mango pudding dessert was a nice way to end the night..

Also there is the option of ordering off the menu ala carte as opposed to AYCE.
Service was great, price was good, and I'll definitely be going back.

They do have AYCE at lunch. Just ate there tonight, service was excellent - after having my water refilled I took a sip and someone instantly topped it up. Food was good for the price IMO but I'm no sushi expert or anything. Mackerel is one of my favourites and theirs was good. I'll be back for sure, would recommend

I usually eat at the AYCE in Chinatown, in the dragon mall. Great value. Hopefully this place will offer equal value for the buck.

I went there tonight and I agree that their all you can eat sashimi menu is a little bit complicated. However, I ask the people there and they explain to me very well. Besically thye have 3 kinds of sashimi in the AYCE menu, and you can order one order per person each time. For example, if you have 3 people, you can order 3 Salmon, 3 Tuna and 3 Spicy seafood sashimi each round, and each order is 3 pieces. Other than that, I am very happy with their services and food.

I was told the owner is the same person who used to own the AYCE sushi BBQ across from SAIT

I guess I'd better try it out before it goes down hill.

Just tried it couple nights ag, and it's protty good. The fish was pretty decent for AYCE and they came out FAST (within 5-10 min). Service was really good. the Korean BBQ was mah, average best. They just got their liquor license and the drinks are cheapppp. $3.50-$3.99 for a bottle of beer, $3.99/$6.99 for a Small/large Sake, and only $6.99 for a large Japanese (Saporo etc..) beer. Cheap!

I will definitly be going back. Good Deal.

Went there a week ago and found the food to be good and the service to be great. Drinks were topped up multiple times without asking and servers repeatedly came back to check for sheets, even after we had just begun on a new round.

There was a middle aged asian guy who I assumed to be the owner or manager. He made sure we got everything that we checked on the sheet.

Glad they managed to get their liguor license.
