Bonjour hommes,
Two people are dead and two others are in hospital in stable condition after a vehicle failed to navigate an on-ramp to McKnight Blvd. late Sunday night.
Just before midnight a Honda CRV with five occupants was traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on Stoney Trail, according to police, when the driver attempted to navigate the ramp to McKnight Boulevard. The vehicle left the road and traveled approximately 120 metres, rolling several times and coming to rest back on its wheels, according to the fire department, which dispatched a fire rescue unit as well as another engine to the scene.
Two occupants, not restrained by seatbelts, were ejected from the vehicle. Both were transported to hospital, where a 16-year-old female subsequently died of her injuries. A second passenger, who was initially taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, has also died. The victim is a 20-year-old man.
Two other passengers were trapped in the vehicle. Extrication of the trapped passengers took approximately 15 minutes, say fire officials. Both were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The driver, an adult male, was uninjured and taken into custody by police at the scene. Police said speed and alcohol were factors in the accident and charges were pending against the driver. The driver was later released without charges and police say it is unknown when charges may be laid.
The Traffic Section continues to investigate the accident. The intersection at Stoney and McKnight was closed for several hours while the Traffic section conducted the investigation.
Anyone having any information in this investigation is asked to contact the Traffic Section at 403-567-4000 or Crime Stoppers 1 800 222 8477.
