Default UPS - now screwing you on express as well...

Just a friendly post as I was in shock today.

I know we all know sending anything with UPS ground will result in some very NASTY brokerage charges.

The only other way around this until recently was to use one of the UPS express options which would then include the brokerage fee in the shipping charges.

I was told today that this is no longer the case and brokerage is now being placed on express shipping charges as well.

So just to clarify, avoid using UPS for anything in the future.

Ground, express, express saver, you will get hit with fees regardless now.

    Only $21 in fees..........

That would be a 21% charge on the stated value. They have a floating brokerage fee in place. You can pay hundreds on the top tier.

OP if you got screwed then bring up their "pricing" chart that they have on their site. I was looking at it last night and it clearly states there is no charges for anything that is other than ground.

Thanks for heads up i guess.

I just received a package from the US, value was $175 and I still had to pay close to $35 for brokerage fees. UPS is BS...and yes, mine was shipped express from Bavarian autoparts.

I'll scan the waybill when I get home. I was charged brokerage though on a UPS Worldwide Express Saver package. Until tonight it never happened once before. The charge isn't overly high, it sounds more like a standard rate, but just enough to piss you off.

"Brokerage" is still free, however they now have "Bond Fees" when taxes and duties aren't paid up front

Has anyone tried clearing a UPS package yourself to avoid the brokerage fees?

I've read that all you do is pick up the paperwork from the UPS hub, go to the Canada Border Service Agency office to fill out some forms. Once the paperwork is processed, you take that back hub, and UPS will release the package.

The question is: Where is the UPS hub and the CBSA office in Calgary?

I just called UPS because I'm getting a laptop shipped from the states via UPS expedited. The option costs 150 dollars but I need it ASAP, so I paid more. At least with this shipping option, it covers brokerage fees but they told me the bond charges is 10 dollars flat and then I pay sales taxes depending on which province I'm in. If it's a 10 dollar flat rate, that's not TOO bad. Still a shitty and shady shipping company but I can live with 10 dollars seeing how that company is the only option they shipped through.

    Perhaps, but it's definitely palatable.

I just ordered $4,700 worth of product from the states and only had to pay $201.25 in taxes/duties/etc. Shipping was $180. Not bad at all.

I've done it and I wouldn't do it again. If you chose to self clear, the shipment still needs to go to a bonded warehouse in town. The bonded warehouse starts charging you the minute the truck arrives with your shipment. I believe $75/day was the rate when I did it, and it doesn't matter if you're there to pick it up off the truck and it doesn't hit the ground. That's a minimum. If you can't get there that day, the meter keeps running. You need to pick up the paperwork from the bonded warehouse and then get yourself to one of the CBSA offices in town. I went to the one in the NE. You need to wait and clear the package, pay your taxes, and then take it back to the warehouse for them to release your package. Depending on how busy the CBSA office is you can expect to wait. It took me close to an hr and there was only 1-2 other people there. Add in driving time and

It wasn't worth it to me to save $25. Next time I'll gladly pay the fees, have my package delivered to my door and eat lunch instead of wasting it driving across town.

Last time I tried to clear the fees myself, I wasnt allowed to because the shipment arrived by air and passed through the Vancouver border instead of the Calgary one. As far as I know, there was no way of specifying which border youd like the shipment to pass through. They basically said that if I wanted to clear that package Id have to do it in person at customs in Vancouver.

In summary, if you ship with UPS, expect to be raped.

+1 they really are the best. I've never once had a problem. UPS
A Ferrari is a high maintenance chick, you spend money regardless of what you do with her. You can baby the C63, or slap on all seasons, and you won't be spending anything but yearly maintenance. Of course that's like dating a stripper and refusing to fuck her, which would make you gay.

Just had something shipped UPS express. $300 item, Paid $150 shipping to express it, and was only charged GST at the door.

Also had something shipped FedEx Express. $65 item, $28 for express shipping, and was charged GST + $10 at the door. Rod Fee or whatever
