Yup, not a chance would I pay for cancer treatment for the little guys. Love 'em and all, but jesus. They're animals, not humans. You can just buy more, and the beauty is you'll love the next ones and they'll love you back (i.e. manipulate you for food and shelter) just the same.
My dog just finished going through chemotherapy. Probably just over 20K all in. Thankfully I had pet insurance (since he was a pup). Made the decision to treat much easier as most of coats (90%) was covered. Without pet insurance I'm not sure what I would have done.

    I'm with trupanion

TL;DR - my vote goes to skip insurance.

We've got two dogs, no insurance. So far coming out way ahead of vet bills vs. insurance cost. We decided to take the educated risk, since neither of our breeds has common/expensive problems. We've only had one incident so far (cherry eye, was somewhat common to breed), and it was not expensive to fix.

Another data point, is the dog I had growing up lived for like 16 or 17 years. No insurance, no issues. I don't think I'd ever get pet insurance unless I had a dog with lots of common/expensive problems (e.g. great dane). Moot point, because I'd never buy an expensive dog that has lots of common problems.
    Mutts or pure breeds?
    Will fuck off, again.

I use Trupanion. So far it is about a dead break even for me. And I have a dog known for issues. English Bulldog. He is 7 years old now, so shall see how the next 4-5 years go, he could very well end up needing some major work by then and I'll be happy I got the insurance. But for now I haven't seen any benefit to it.

Probably helps though that we don't feed our dog garbage. I know for a lot of dogs they have issues associated with eating crap dry dog food.

what do you mean by this? how do you figure the two things relate to each other?
I figure once you have kids you stop treating your pets like they're people.

We use Pets Plus Us who have recently added a discount for Costco Members.

    https://www.petsplusus.com/partner/costco
That's who we use. No claims so far but was pretty easy sign up. Costco discount is great as well.

I learned the hard way 3 weeks into ownership of my dog and a 1500$ unexpected bill later.

Guess everyone is different. Have a 3.5 yr old dog, 1.5 yr old son and another on the way and we still would do anything for our dog including expensive treatments if necessary.

Two current ones, one mutt and one purebred. The one I had growing up was a "purebred", but we had our doubts about his authenticity.

On thing to consider with the insurance, it’s one thing to know what you would do in a bad situation, it’s a completely different situation when you have a wife/SO and kids to think about.

Case in point. Pretty sure my wife would sell her soul to get our cat surgery, despite my opinions on the matter.

That should factor in to if you think insurance could be valuable (ie are you going to end up paying for something drastic even if you don’t want to ).

update from my previous 2017 post

Sister in law's dog passed away earlier this year after so many visits into the vet, she had Trupanion and still racked over $10k of debt, she said it was worth it as she was her baby

Our 11 year old pug had pyometra after her latest heat and we had to have her spayed.. about $2000 bill. no insurance.

lol but on a serious note, I wash our dog's feet twice a day. Keeps the house clean as the dogs play outside often.
Who wants shit and dirt in their house floors, furniture, bed, etc?

same here, my Shiba likes to hike/dig its paws after each piss to put some scent down, sometimes on straight up dirt.

I always try to take a wet wipe to their paws when they come back in side.

Huh. Is that what it's supposed to be for? I've been using it wrong for years I guess.

Mine is an English bulldog as well, and they are known for issues. The big ones have been:
    -Aspirational Pneumonia (x2)
    -Knee surgery
-16 teeth removed this year. (Hes 10.. average life span is 8-10yrs, so thats fairly regular)

Fed only raw dog food.. no kibble.

90$ a month for our 8 month girl through trupanion but I’m going to look into desjardins (which I believe is Costco?). Seemed to be cheaper (initially). I was only planning to keep it for a year in half but maybe Ill keep it longer if the price is better. Our other two dogs, chihuahuas, have no insurance even though they would be much cheaper. We have had to do two ccl surgery’s on one of them at $3000/leg
