Default location of a job ( Importance)

    Hey ppl,

wondering what importance you put on the location of a job.

I know close to home is nice, but is it worth taking a job you may not like as much as the other?

I'm not sure what other factors to take in to account considering pay will be on par.

still researching stock options and such.

    Thanks,

    Barlow

I have never worked anywhere that took more than 20-25 minutes to get to under normal circumstances. The only way I would even consider a 30 minute+ commute is if it was a job that I really loved and I was compensated for the extra travel time and mileage by my employer. My 20 minute drive already turns into an hour each way when it snows, there's no way I'm spending more than 2 hours driving to and from work for a 9 hour shift regardless of road conditions.

Location is almost as important as compensation and job satisfaction to me.

Even with underground parking, I hated working in downtown.

Location is of utmost importance, right up there with job satisfaction and $$$.

Consider that if you're working downtown and it takes you an hour to get there and an hour to get back. That's 2 hours devoted to work that you don't get back.

While it lasts, I'm working 10 minutes from home walking distance.

right now my commute is half hour to the base of the mine and then 25 minutes by bus up to the site. its pretty long but with a car pool and the bus I don't have to drive much so I can read the news or whatever.
once i move back to calgary to finishup school the furthest i'll live is 15 minutes away though for sure. unless i can live with my parents

Pretty important, I was commuting 110km some days and it sucked my time and money for gas.

I moved 3600 km for my current job, so yeah...

If the drive is nice, then I don't mind a longer commute. If its 25 min of rush hour hell that turns into 2 hours with winter or an accident, I go mental. Life is too short to be needlessly furious for any portion of your day.

My dad told me: "work where you want to work and live where you want to live."

I have been relocated to 4 different office buildings since buying my house a year ago. If we were to have bought a place near my first office space I would have a crazy commute now.

I used to commute from 20km each way and with traffic it was terrible. I now have a 5-10 minute drive depending on the lights and I like it way better. I was offered a $10000-15000/yr raise to move to a location 20km drive away and I turned it down. For me with a family at home to see Location is huge to me. I don't want to be stuck on Deerfoot for an hour.

At a previous workplace I had a long commute, but in the end this was a non factor because I was doing something I enjoyed with like minded individuals.

Since good things never last, my next job had a daily commute that you could predict to the nearest 30 seconds (if you choose to roll through a rural intersection or stop). In this case the commute was a dream, especially on a motorcycle; but didn't make up for the fact that the job itself was a drain.

Personally, the commute means nothing in the way of job/life satisfaction. For the amount of isolation I put in 8 hours at a time, I could have already made amends for some really nasty crimes.

If anyone offers you a job Barlow you should take it. lol. I live downtown now and thinking about commuting from the burbs scares the shit out of me.

If I lived any further away, I would go mental. I am already 45+mins away on open highway. I am thinking of finding a place closer to the office right now, but I made a rule that my fuel savings must equal out my rent. Until then, I don't mind the commute.

How far are we talking about OP?

I was working ~ 1 to 1.5 hrs (in rush hour) away from my old job, and that commute was bloody painful. I wouldn't want do that again. It definitely made a shitty job/situation even worse.

I have a 30 second commute now. Working from home is the best. Never been happier, more productive and in better health.

In the past I've turned down job offers downtown because I really hate being/going downtown. If I had to go there M-F for work, I'm sure I would go crazy.

Absolutely hated working downtown. Didn't have a parking spot so I didn't drive, but I'm not sure that would've made me happier. Taking the bus in -30 degree weather... ughhh. Noisy as shit buses. It would take a big salary jump + perks for me to consider working downtown again.

Now I work in the NW about 20 mins from my home, also in the NW. But it's consistently 20 mins (atleast when the weather is good) as the only high traffic road I have to hit is Shaganappi trail for about 5-10 mins.

25 -30 minutes decent regular traffic,

which I like to translate into under 20 minutes most friday mornings

which could equal 3 hours october 28 first sign of snow when everyone forgets how to drive

Worse comes to worse I could take the train there, op on my ipod, and read a book.

I am actually surprised at how many people put location as very important, because I see people living at one corner of the City and commuting to another.

I too think location and travel time are very important. If my company decides to move office to a location farther away from home, I will be seriously thinking about quitting my job OR moving (if there is a suitable location near the office).

I left a 10 minute commute for a 45 minute commute and just left that 45 minute commute for another 10 minute commute. However, the commute had nothing to do with any of those job changes.
