If you’re trying to buy or sell a car privately, the Calgary Police Service would like you to be aware that there is an increase in the reports of private auto sale fraud.
When selling your car, beware of fraudulent bank drafts and fake ID which are being used by fraudsters to purchase vehicles from legitimate sellers. Once the transaction is complete and the fraudulent buyer has driven off in the vehicle, the duped seller is left with an illegitimate bank draft and no way to reclaim the vehicle.

These stolen vehicles are then quickly sold to new buyers. Often the vehicles are not inexpensive, usually they are valued at between $30,000 and $60,000. In many cases, the vehicle registration number is altered to allow the registration to appear legitimate. The sellers then walk away with the cash while the buyer is left with an illegitimate purchase that can end up being seized by authorities.

Here are some tips for protecting yourself if you’re selling or buying a vehicle privately: Sellers are urged to accompany buyers to a legitimate bank, observe the bank draft being ordered and to have it in their possession before releasing the vehicle to the buyer. If you’re buying a car you should ask about the vehicle’s history of ownership and inspect the seller’s registration documentation. Things to be wary of include:

A vehicle that has been re-registered within six months.

Documentation in a name not corresponding to the ID of the seller.

A seller who refuses to provide picture ID.

A seller who is unable to give clear details about the vehicle’s history of ownership that can be verified (ie. a dealership / salesman / previous owner that you can contact).

A seller who won’t allow you to come to their residence.

A seller who can’t provide supporting documentation for the vehicle (ie. mechanical work, oil changes, other servicing, etc).

When conducting background research on a vehicle you find that the vehicle has been previously registered out of province or in the United States. A price that is not the fair market value of the vehicle.

The number of these types of fraud in 2009 was 14 cases, 25 in 2010, and 24 to date in 2011. There is no one indicator that will identify a criminal purchaser or seller, but the more red flags present, the more cautious Calgarians should be.

If you have been the victim of a fraud, please call the Calgary Police Service non-emergency number at 403-266-1234 to report the crime.

If only there were an Edmonton Beacon that had the same wealth of information as Calgary Beacon, then tragedy could have been avoided.
