There are lots of good bikes for $5K.
In Alberta, do you have an insurance cost break for bikes under 400cc? If so, then I would Highly Recommend a Yamaha FZR400 - any year.
these are Great little bikes that are super light and nimble, easy to ride, and with a reasonably skilled rider, they are emenently capable of blowing off much larger bikes in the twisties. They are a 4 cyl. 4 stroke of 59 r.w. hp.
You can get an excellent one for $5000 or less. They are somewhat hard to find, though. I seriously wish I did not sell my 1985 "Gray Market" model.

Pretty well any pre 93 750 in good shape should be able to be purchased for $5K or less. Standard frame bikes, like the Kawasaki Zephyr or Honda CB series are less.

Don't overlook older classics like the late seventies Kawasaki KZ650, Yamaha 650 parallel twin (great counterfeit Truimph Bonneville) Suzuki GS anything, or Honda's CB 400. 550 or 750 (avoid the CB650)
The big 1000 & 1100's of the era tended to have wiggly frames that were not up to the challenge of handling the power.

    lol
thanks guys, I may have found one.

The reason I only wanted to spend 5K was cause I needed gear, but a friends 99' F4 with leathers, 2 helmets, jacket, pipe and grip warmers popped up for $5800 bucks, and will wait til spring

    13K
    Should I buy it?

Your bike is worth 4gs man :P

the Jnr T is maybe 700$, the trail pimps, and hubs are 400$, your frame was 400, your cransk/chain guide/ and BB were about 300, your shift gear was about 150$ and your discs were 400$ in total.

most it could be is about 2grnad, or you got ripped of hardcore man.

My bighit DH wasnt 4 grand, and i have a Monster T, dual mag30s, rear king hub and front XT hub, hope M4 front and hayes Mag rear, manitou swinger 6 way rear shock, snafu jump seat, block8 bars, and RF stem, PIG dh headset. Michelin 2.35/2.65 tires.

    Get the F4.

A Honda F4 with leathers, and hopefully gloves, boots and a helmet would be good. The bike should be nearly mint & under 35,000 km, tho for that price.
What is the status of the F4?

You obviously don't know what bike parts are worth.

    frame: $650
    brakes: $500
    jr: $700
    wheels: $400
    cranks/pedals: $600
    seat/tube: $100
    stem/bar/grips/barends: $250
    tires: $140
    xt 8 spd/der.: $150
    total: $3490
    w/ tax: $3734.30

And FYI, I said it was worth 4K, I didn't say I paid 4K -- it cost me just under $1500.

The riding and performance differences between the F3 and F4 are infintessimal. The F3 has a little more fairing coverage, and the F4 looks a little more current. I know Honda went on about how the F4 was such a quantum leap beyond the F3. From the riders perspective, I found the differences to be slight.
    You will like the F4.

Hondas are flawless, and I hate them for that. They have no soul.

Look at all the cars that traditionally have cult followings - Jaguars, Ferarris, Alfa Romeo's, US Muscle Cars, even early Japanese cars like Toyota 2000GT's, Datsun Fairlady sports cars, and early Honda 600's; large cult followings for seriously quirky cars.
I am not saying that these quirks are Flaws - they are just mechanical eccentricities. That idiocyncratic nature gives them "soul".

Characteristics that are both an annoyance and a joy, like the pain in the ass of keeping a clutch in an XKE, yet enjoying the serenity of putting the big Jag through the gears on a mountain highway; The horrendous oversteer of a 911, and the cars' appetite for expensive rear tires, coupled with the joy of driving the threshold of terror; the time consuming fiddling with the dohc of an Alfa, yet the pleasure of that ripping-silk music it makes on the pipe; the severe maddening annoyance of keeping that tri-power carb setup on your 389 GTO working properly, yet getting it right for one incredibly exilarating weekend when your little GTO blew away every 440 Mopar it went up against; The frustration of having your prized 67 Toyota 2000GT rust just by looking at it wrong, yet getting it out top down on a warm summer day and watching the tach hit 9500 RPM and the speedo hit...god knows what, because those early Nippondenso gauges were also very failure prone...

Want more examples? That is what I mean by "Soul". _________________________________________________

Perhaps the modified and high-strung imports of the present generation, with their maintenance intensive states of tuning, nitrous systems etc. will join the Mercers, Stutz, Auburns and modified Model T's & A's of the twenties and thirties, bobbed Ford with shaved Flatheads, and lead sleds of the fifties and Big Block Street Machines of the sixties and seventies, as icons of a generation. (too bad the eighties sucked so bad)

OOps, Fuck, I forgot I was on a Bikes forum.
Dare, then, that I elaborate the many flaws of my favourite marque (and nom-de-plume) and describe at length the many pleasures of riding the Italian Bitch when she is behaving and performing to please her man?

I'd sell you mine for 5000, in a heart beat. But I just can't seem to part with it, cuz I love riding.

i had an f4 and that was my only complaint with it, it was way too smooth absolutely nothing wrong with it at all. any kind of rider could hop on that bike and feel comfortable with it. i rode the f3 as well and did not like that as much, it came with narrower rubber and overall felt just a little outdated. if you can get an f4 do it.

Good point. However the narrower rubber is less expensive, The handling on the F4 is a touch quicker than on the F3. However, I found the F3 to be very stable, and did not consider it to feel outmoded. However, I have been riding bikes with 17 18 or 19 up front, and 16 or 17 on the back for most of my life. The wider tires took getting used to.
I suppose it is a matter of what you are used to.

well im not going to be racing it at the track, its just a cheaper form of transportation and some fun for summer.
so from the sounds of it, the F3 will do fine
