Question Bringing back wine from Cali!

    Hey all,

basically i'm going down to cali in a week and will be checking out a couple of the wineries in sonoma so my plan is to probably bring a case or two back. I'll be travelling with the misses and i believe we can bring back 2 bottles (1.5L or 2x 750ml) of wine each but what kinda taxes/duties will i be looking at if i go over?

anyone want to share their experiences with this as i imagine i'm not the only wine lover on beyond? lol

I seemed to have found my own answer but not sure if someone on here can confirm this?

On the AGLC website, it says that you can bring back 9.09L of alcohol per person which roughly translates into 1 case (12 bottles x 750ml) of wine.

Well these are the federal limits so you would have to pay duty on the 9.09L - 1.5L. Does anyone know how they calculate they calculate the cost as I wish to bring more than 1.14L back when I go to houston?

I brought back 50 bottles of wine from Cali and they just charged me GST on the bottles over my limit.

I once brought back a bunch of beer and they charged me duty as well as GST. A good deal $19 box of Coors turned into $35.

Depends on how nice the border guard is, and if its a chick, you're fucked.

When we did a Cali. Wine road trip last year, we brought back 2 cases (less 3 bottles we drank on the way back), and the customs guy let us through without paying anything. Guess it depends on the customs guy you get.

This is pretty much it. Sometimes you get hit and sometimes its nothing.

Basically just buy the stuff you WANT and not the stuff that just happens to be cheap. Be prepared to end up paying what you would pay for it locally but with the possibility of going through customs without paying any duties or taxes.

Is it not the same amounts as regular items though, 6.1% Duty, 5% GST. How did that beer get to $35 for example?
I must know, my sweet tea vodka beckons.

you're forgetting the "Sin tax". I don't recall the rate off by hand, but liquor taxes in Alberta (well, all of Canada) are pretty high.
