yeah sketchup is cool, a little overwhelming at first, but it's ok when you get used to it.

It's not the size that matters, it's the taste it leaves in your mouth.

I used Sketchup to plan my kitchen remodel, it's quite powerful. My main gripe with it, is many of the tools/keys, are kind of un-intuitative.

Once you get a handle on the keyboard shortcuts, how to move around/navigate, it's pretty good. I especially like it linking to a large online database of objects/models to import.

    Bump from the dead.

I'm looking at doing my basement this year. typically a graph paper and pencil type of guy but I'd like to be a bit more accurate and have the ability to run through a bunch of different potential layouts which I'd eventually also use for things like electrical etc. Whats everyone using these days? I tried "Magic Plan" as one of the instagrammer's I follow recommends it but I am having a hell of a time doing it on my phone/Ipad. I'd also like the ability to place objects like posts by their measurements from the wall as opposed to dragging them around.

This is going to sound crazy, and probably stupid, but I use MS Paint. I make each pixel equal to 1/2", and just mostly use the rectangle tool and straight line tools for walls, doors, cabinets, etc.

I know there's better programs out there, but it's always available, never needs updates, and I can even use it at work because it's on every Windows computer ever made.

I used https://floorplanner.com recently since I really struggled with other tools. May be overkill but it was easy and didn't cost much.

I used an online autodesk one recently. I liked that it didn’t have many restrictions on outputs.

Most of the free online programs are abominably restricted in what you can and can’t do.

I put masking tape on the floor where walls were potentially going to go and walked around. Honestly, it worked great.
The biggest advice is to not get hung up making your basement nicer than the rest of your house. Too many people make it nicer or 100x nicer and in the end you're still not going to be spending that much time down there no matter what you tell yourself.

Visio. I found sketchup to be overkill. I probably put a few hours into this, nothing too crazy.

There are plenty of folks out there that will design a floorplan for you as well. I benefitted from the fact that a pro framed out our basement before we bought it- they were smart about how they positioned areas like closets where bulkheads are, to maximize the space you occupy.

One thing is you shouldn't be afraid to bust up the concrete of the bathroom rough-ins aren't in the perfect positions. Surprisingly cleap to do.

i used 5d on my ipad to draw out our basement. Had the added bonus of doing a 3d rendering and multiole types of user definable furniture. Very important to buy in, as my wife couldnt conceptualize our basement floorplan/walls/bathroom at all.

I would love to use visio as I used to use it for well site lease layouts at work but I had the cost associated with it. Last night I played around with google Sketchup and I am sure with a little bit of practice I could probably get pretty good at it. For the time being my crude drawings will help me budget and get buy in from the wife. Lots of makers use it for furniture and gadget design so I am sure its a skill I should probably learn.
