It all started last fall, I had set out to find my beater for the winter ahead. I had gone and looked at some explorers (what I got the year before) but nothing overly impressive. I stumbled upon a Outback Wagon. Had great options, good price and fairly good shape plus all-time all-wheel-drive.
Usually in the spring I break the cover off my summer car and get rid of the beater until I need one the next winter. But this beater was different.
It was great for winter,
had a awesome car starter that worked from a long distance
plenty of room for my hockey gear (I'm a goalie, lots of gear..)
bought some $50 wheels on kijiji and painted them white
AND EVEN HEATED SEATS
not to mention allllllll the money I spent of my rattle can interior and swaeeeet sony deck.
So i figured I would keep it and probably use it again next year and save myself the hassle of selling it then trying to find a new one with starter and heated seats that wouldn't break the bank a few months down the road.
Not only that but it came in handy this summer hauling some stuff around when friends were moving and camping. Not to mention this was a hell of a off roader. Beat my buddys F150 through pretty much anything (that is if he would even risk going into some of the stuff.
After taking it 4 wheeling I got curious about maybe lifting it a little bit, maybe some mud tires? Never really actually considering doing anything cause I didn't want to go and dump a bunch of $$$ into the beater.
Then one day I go into work only to find....
4 ALMOST BRAND NEW LT TIRES. 12mm of tread great shape sitting in the tire recycling!!!
Sure they are 31x10.5" tires and after doing ALL my research the biggest tires I ever found on a Subaru were 29x9.5" tires.... But that is only 1 more inch wide and 2 more inches tall... right.... and anything is possible...
SO..
test fit, NOT EVEN CLOSE. wheels have WAY TO MUCH offset, wont clear the strut, wont clear the fenders, wont clear the bumpers, and WILL NOT FIT THE CAR.
GO to pick n pull and grab some low offset steelies off an old volvo turbo, find some cheap 1.25" wheel spacers, struts and springs off of a 2005 forester, a few hours with a cutting wheel and a sledge hammer and what do you have?
INTRODUCING MONSTUBARU
*** they said I was crazy and they would never fit***
now yes I know I still have some work to do, I haven't cut the front or rear bumper yet, should probably cut the front and rear fenders a bit more as well, and i still need to modify the fender liners so I can actually turn all the way. I also have another 1" strut spacer coming in the mail in a few days so I will have even more clearance after that.
BUT SERIOUSLY, WHAT DO YOU THINK SO FAR?!?!
