With two of my friends, they did exactly that (except sell their homes), they moved overseas for a year and traveled through Australia and the South Pacific. They figured out exactly what they wanted to do, came back and are living the dream (they figured out vacation and travel are their highest priorities, so upon their return, both went into Education and made a lot of sacrifices to get those degrees and still pay bills and now they travel every summer to the tune of $10k+ per person and everyone, myself included, is jealous of their job satisfaction and the fulfillment they get from doing something they actually want to do).

If you are willing to accept a lower standard of living for a much higher quality of life, I can think of a million places that would be better than Calgary.

When I was in Hawaii, I saw so many people who seemed so incredibly happy having next to nothing, because their backyard was, well, Hawaii, the ocean, etc. Flawless climate 365 days a year. No Stress (pretty much the single most important thing in life, IMO), no traffic, etc. That is worth a lot to some people, way more than a solid job and a 2hr commute every day in Calgary.

I'm not saying sell everything and live in a shack in Hawaii, but it really makes you think!
