Default Building Code - Handrail off a deck

Does anyone know what the building code is with regards to handrails and stairs. Specifically stairs coming off a deck. What is the height at which a hand rail is deemed mandatory. For some reason I want to think 30" but if there is someone in the industry that can confirm I would appreciate it.

    TIA

I think 24" high then it's considered a deck, lower and it's a patio. Check the city web page or call 311 and they'll send you the link via e-mail.

Any deck over 24" in height from the ground requires rail. If your stairs are over 24" in height you need rail on at least one side if your stairs are less than 42" wide. If they are over 42" then you need rail on both sides.

AFAIK, you need a handrail for the stairs when there are 4 or more risers... and risers cannot be taller than 7 1/8".

As for a railing itself around the deck, you need a permit for anything taller than 2' off the ground, but I am not 100% sure about the railing, I believe it's the same.
