Question for someone who do their own composing.

How much water you need to throw at the compose? And how long does it take for it to break down? A week, 2 weeks?

We are ultra dry here. Unless we want to use water from river to break down organic garbage, composing is a waste of and resources. Leaving it above or below ground make very little difference.

Depends on your method. I'm lazy, and on a 1-year compost turnaround. Hypermanaged could be around a month - but only when it's warm out.

Think input vs output. The nutrient output recovered far outweighs the cost of the cost of the small investment of water.

That being said, I just let rainfall take care of mine. If I did choose to water, it would be a drop in the bucket compared to the many other ways we waste water in Calgary.

Not sure if we would use a composting bin at our household. We would most likely stuff the green bin with more blue bin materials.

Then I'm for it as long as it doesn't cost taxpayer an extra dime and can cover cost by selling compose.

You mean like the hundreds of commercial building green spaces that have their automatic sprinklers going on all summer, even during a week of record rainfall? Nah, nothing wasteful about that at all.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

I hope you are as rigorous with other matters.

People said the same about recycling.

Having said that, I'm not a fan of green bins for fear of the "Bullshit" scenario where all sorts of bins are set up. Edmonton separates their organic and inorganic waste, I'd rather see that happen here. Though the cost of the facility wouldn't be cheap. I'd rather start with a bunch of community drop-offs (similar to leaves and pumpkins) to help bring in the people on the fence, these can double for grass and such as well.

But I do have to say having a bin that I can just dump all my leaves and grass clippings into rather than struggling to put them in bags (seems a silly thing to struggle with) is somewhat appealing.

I hope we don't get more bins... they already take up more space in my garage than I'd like.

I would much prefer a community compost drop-off, if there was one, I'd use it.

I could careless about green bins as long as no extra fees needed to run the program. I probably will use them like I said, in summer and fall. I won't bother to separate organic vs non organic waste from within the house.

another bin? for me that means also another bin inside the house for organics as i dont run outside to throw garbage or recycled items as soon as im done with them - just pile the crap up till thursday night, they're going to be some stank alleys if this goes through.

I applaud your financial vigilance. Now that we've determined that the green bins aren't going to cause you pennies, perhaps we can turn our attention to the billions our government spends on warfare.

Somebody has to pay for it. If it isn't user fees, then it will higher taxes or lost services.

Unfortunately, we can affect civil policies more than federal policies. And the final product of green bin can be a revenue generator, why do I need to subsidize a business? They are already getting my waste for free.
