I think he’s getting at the amount of fuel consumed just to get it to China. Then is China really the best (green) place to be repurposing it?

Hard to say if it’s currently a net environmental benefit in my eyes with all the factors considered. But probably a step in the right direction in terms of spearheading the move to repurposing materials.
Doing stuff in China is cheap. It is cheaper to print books in China and have them loaded onto a barge and shipped to Canada than it is to print them locally.

ya i was referring to the impact of shipping them to china. I assume they compact the heck out of the material before shipping, but it still seems like it would be better for the environment to just bury it in our big empty country.

I still think as a society we have been focusing on recycling too much. the focus needs to be on reducing and reusing.

Recycling only works because it's profitable for someone. If there were no profit (ie burying it), there would be no recycling. I agree on the reducing/reusing, but that's too much inconvenience for most people right now, it'll take generations to curb it.

Does anyone else now have a green bin that smells like an inner city clothing donation box? What have you done to clean it, or do you simply hold your breath when you toss something in it?

Don't know if these were the guys or not, but I saw a van driving around that does exactly what you're looking for and wished I'd thought of it myself...

I pressure wash my bins once or twice a year. Also to prevent it, I don't put compost directly in it, I put everything in large paper compost bags. $6 for 10 bags that'll generally last 8-10 weeks.

At the landfill they have a greenwaste area, yet when I took a bunch of fucking sod loose there the other day they told me it goes in the "throw and go" anyway this morning I put out my black cart and 5 bags of sod in black bags. City didnt take any of the bags and just said dont put yardwaste out in black bags. Well fuck don't contradict yourself at the landfill then.

Yea does seem contradictory from a customer perspective but since the compost facility and the landfill are different operations it probably doesn’t seem contradictory to them.

I didn’t realize that either but I just looked on their site and they specifically say they don’t take sod for composting at landfill sites. I would have thought the same as you though

It cant exceed 60KG though and I reckon I have about 200KG worth of sod. Last green cart day I had 25 of those brown bags, I put them out and it fucking rained overnight. Guess I will be rolling the dice with that again tonight.

I had less out of the stuff I tear out when I planted some trees but I kept them dry in a storage shed and fill up 1/2 of green cart per week and clear them out over 6 weeks.

FWIW, the green cart can go way over 60kg. I think on the cart itself it says the weight limit is in the mid 200lbs (250, 275?) which is over 100kg. I've definitely filled my green and black bins each far over 60kg and they still get taken away. No issues.

Don't worry though, the fee won't be changing.

Until spring, when they need more money for the increased pick-ups.

They have done enough studies and meetings to determine that the saving is sound by reducing service. Fortunately, the cost for the studies and meetings just broke even with the saving so there will be no additional cost to you. You don't have to thank them, it's their jobs to serve.

Can we go back to every week for black bin then? I only really need it every two weeks, except the asshole constantly misses my black bin and then blames me for not having it out. (it's always out).

With the amount of snow we got the last week, there was no way to not have the bins sit on snow banks, have enough room for neighbors bins, or not block the road. I'm not allowed to shovel the snow pile onto the road, so my only option was to have enough space to pack the bins beside each other. Something's gotta fucking give. I guess the shit's sitting in the middle of the road to comply with this fucking city's bullshit demands.

Just because service that we're forced to pay for sucks doesn't mean we shouldn't try to do something about it.

    https://calgaryherald.com/news/local...ays-new-report

I like how the city looks at privatization and says service would get worse. I don't know how that's possible haha. Still hilarious that we all just took it up the ass with the hidden fee hikes.

    1. Bring in new green bin program. Charge more money to cover for new service.
    2. reduce garbage pick up by 1/2 to cover for #1.
    3. reduce green bin pick up by 1/2 to save money.
    4. same level of service before #1. Keep the extra fees. Profit.
