    Default Wireless Home network suggestions

    Hello All,

I live in an apartment so re-wiring is out of the questions.

    I have:
    1-laptop
    1-desktop
    1-ps3

    Telus optik modem/router
    ---------------------------------------
PS3 and Laptop function fine with the wireless network, relatively low ping and good download speeds.

For the Desktop i purchased the DWA-130 from D-link, its a USB adapter, but I find that the transfer rate from desktop to laptop peaks at 900kbs, whilst I can get good transfer rate to my ps3, not great but good. Also an average ping of 45ms.

For the record, I want to be able to stream MKV movies from my desktop to laptop and ps3 (ps3ms). This usually works great when wired in, but unfortunately thats not a possibility here.

Now, I believe the desktop issues are due to the USB adapter, I just wanted to see what you guys have experienced, is using a PCI card better or should I go with the bridge route, using a DD-WRT modded router.

    Thanks in advance,

How old is the desktop that the mobo doesnt have built in wifi? It may be time for a new machine.

That being said a PCI-E wifi adapter would perform better.

I don't know much about this topic, but would you consider using those powerline adaptors?

    http://www.dlink.ca/products/?pid=533

I think they are about $50 at Walmart, but I don't know what they would do to ping times.

If your router supports N mode, force your USB adapter to N mode to see if speed improves.

It may have negotiated a lower speed.

Okay, maybe move the PC closer to the router and wire it and then re-test it. That will tell you if it is the wifi or the computer.

Also i dont think you need adapters. I can torrent over 1mb/s over the telus wifi to my laptop easily on N so there shouldnt be any limitation on the wifi to that level.

^ cos I torrent with the wireless USB at over 1.5mb/s, the problem is file sharing over the network, ping issues and upload issues from the USB stick, also the USB drops connection

Are you trying to stream 720p or 1080p?

Wireless will not stream 1080p mkv files. There arnt many options that would make that work, you simply need some sort of wired connection.

In order to play mkv files on the ps3 you need a wired connection and you need a semi-decent desktop with a wired connection. I think a powerline adaptop would work, I havnt tried although I do own a set.

The powerline is probaly your best shot, but you need to make sure that the outlet from the ps3 is on the same breaker as the outlet at the other end of the powerline (near the router)

Your laptop will not be able to stream 1080p wirelessly (720p should be fine), maybe get a usb stick/drive and copy the things you want to watch, or just copy then over the network before watching.

I have a d-link powerline adapter in the kids room and it streams 1080p mkv's perfectly. Not sure where you got your "they are shit" information from but i pretty much get wired speeds out of mine. Also the wiring in my house is shit. Id say try it. Return it if you dont like it.
