Default Concrete barrier + fence going up on Macleod, why?

I've noticed a concrete barrier with a fence on top being installed on Macleod Trail beginning at 99ave and going all the way to Heritage Drive.

Its been fine without one for the last...what...30+ years.

Why the need to install one now? Speeds on that stretch are like 60-70km/h max.

311 dood referred my question to some department. Awaiting an official answer.

Can't think of too many accidents on that stretch involving cars crossing into oncoming traffic either.

99 ave is where CDN Tire and Superstore are on Macleod, right before Southland.

Probably to prevent jaywalking, as was already suggested.

There is already a chain link fence running down the middle from 94 Ave to 86 Ave I believe... to keep people from crossing over to the McDonald's, etc.

Think high school kids. Beaverbrook is right back there.

Probably to prevent the drunks from Ranchmans from running across the street? Am I at the right spot?

^ Yep. That's the area. I remember when I first moved to Calgary, driving down that stretch, wondering why there was a chain link fence down the middle of Macleod... and then noted the high school kids everywhere.

Makes sense to put up a barrier if jaywalking is an issue.

Yeah, looks pretty awesome doesn't it? Really adds an attractive quality to a city. When the fuck are we going to just let Darwinism do it's job?

This is exactly what was going through my mind as I drove down Macleod today.

    It looks fucking stupid.

Wasn't aware that jaywalking was such a huge issue in that area. Idiots.

I live not far from there, and am around there a lot (Starbucks addiction). The ONLY time it's a issue, is late night Friday/Saturday summer nights, when all the drunks are crossing the road (especially during Stampede).

Darwinism (därw-nzm): A theory of biological evolution developed by Charles Darwin and others, stating that all species of organisms arise and develop through the natural selection of small, inherited variations that increase the individual's ability to compete, survive, and reproduce. Darwin's ideas have been refined and modified by subsequent researchers, but his theories still form the foundation of the scientific understanding of the evolution of life.

People who run out onto a busy street, do not have the ability to survive.
