Unhappy Need help diagnoseing my camry

I have a 94 camry 2.2 4 cyl. When i start the car in the morning it starts than sputters and shuts off. I have to hold the gas pedal down for 1/2 min so it would stay on. I took the car to my mechanic and he couldn't do anything because there is no check engine light on. I did clean the IAC valve and it didn't help.

    Help would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Wow really? My advice. Get a new mechanic first.

Definitely go to a new mechanic. Just because a CEL isnt on does not mean something doesn't have to be replaced/fixed

Show up to these shops without brake pads on and say youre having troubles stopping, think they will say they cant diagnose the vehicle because the CEL isnt on?

Customer: "I cant shift into gear, when I try to put it into first it grinds, and there is a burning smell. I think I need a new clutch"

Mechanic: "Sorry I checked the computer and there is no code. I guess the car was designed like that."

Most obd1 cars will not trigger a light unless its a complete failure.

Those 5SFE's have cold start injectors to help them in the morning and is the first point of interest I would look at. I would also inspect the distributor cap/rotor for wear.

I doubt many dealer techs work on pre 2005 vehicles anymore but I'm sure there's still some seasoned mechanics at the established dealers.

    Does the vehicle have EGR?

If it does this can cause a stall at cold start or idle if it's stuck open. You can try cleaning that as well.

Any other issues in terms of idling? Idles smooth warm or does it still bounce.

Could you have stuff stuck in your iacv from when you cleaned it.

Guy should have at least tried to duplicate the issue; it's guys like this that make a bad name for the rest of us. If a vehicle is intermittent you just use some common deducing as to which direction to go from the customers complaint while staying within a reasonable duration of diagnosis time.

    Best of luck.

There still might be a code somewhere in the system. Not all problems result in a CEL.

For instance, I drive around with a OBD scanner (ScanGauge II - also shows fuel consumption in hours) hooked up to my ECU and it throws the same code (P1298) every time I start the car - yet no CEL ever comes on.

If you still don't have a good mechanic - bring it to us at Garagebox Auto Innovations - call us on Monday at 11! 403.984.2808.

First thing - get a new mechanic like everyone says. Your current mechanic is lazy, and you don't want people like that working on your car.

Have you checked your fuel pump and/or ignition coil? It sounds to me like it could be one or the other or both.

Could also be the MAF sensor. Check the vacuum going to it?

Yeah well I wonder how they get the soft flowing caramel inside the Caramilk bar but you don't see me making a god damn thread about it. Slap your wife Baygirl, straighten him out.

Took it to a reputable shop and explained the situation to him and right away he told me that it's my IAC valve. Told me the buy the part which is expensive but you can buy refurbished or used from the wreckers. I guess i found a new mechanic

But i appreciate all your help guys
