Marriage commissioner question.

So my little sister is getting married in August and her and my future brother in law want me to marry them. Here's my question they are getting married in San Fran can I get a licence to marry them there? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If they are getting married in San Fran you'd have to check their laws, this used to be possilble here, but is alot harder now.

The main thing I can't find is if me being a Canadian citizen will make me ineligible to be deputy commissioner of marriages in California

Just our of curiousity, why would they like you to perform the service? Just not something you see every day, made me curious.

Why not get the license here, marry them here but in private, and then "marry" them in SF for show? The guests don't have to know about it.

Another option is to have them do the civil ceremony in Calgary, then you do the "fancy" wedding in California, without worrying about thier laws.

A friend of mine got married in mexico this way recently. Since Mexican marriage laws are a pain in the ass, it made a lot of sense, and the ceremony with thier friend as an officiant was still very meaningful to them.

Things may have changed again in the past 6 years, but when I got married in 2005, you couldn't get someone a temp license to perform the ceremony. It had to be a licensed marriage commissioner.

I think he's saying get a registered marriage commisioner to do it, or do the paperwork at city hall for records. Then the OP can do whatever they'd like in California for the ceremony.

He American and my little sister is moving there and becoming a US citizen, so getting married there might make the process easier. Plus they just want to do it there

Is she already a US citizen or will she be becoming a US citizen?

Thats the biggest question.

If it's the later I would suggest getting a local commissioner down there to do it. US Immigration is being sticky as hell. Basically gives them no reason to believe the wedding wasn't falsified.

I'm also 99% positive you must be a US citizen in order to perform a legitmate US wedding.

For instance. We weren't able to bring a commisioner with us when we got married in St. Lucia even though our family friend is one and we really wanted to use him instead. In this case Canada and St. Lucia are commonwealth members and you'd think it wouldn't be a problem, but it's not the case.

I am pretty certain you'd need to be granted temporary US citizenship in order to perform a legal marriage in any state in the US. You can get temporary citizenship however you'd need to consult a lawyer on doing so, the costs involved, etc.
