New car time...

After having my golf written off, i'm forced to buy a new car.

The wife has decreed that whatever we get will be automatic

She wants a cross-over. We've tried a few so far:

Nissan Rogue
Hyundai Tuscon
VW Tiguan
Ford Escape
Toyota Rav4

A 'large' hatchback or wagon may work also. We've checked the mazda 3, ford focus, toyota matrix and vw golf.

The ford (escape) was total garbage and the focus and 3 didn't have enough functional hatch space. We and didn't really care for the RAV4. THe matrix was a bit spendy.

Tiguan was very nice, but kind of outside of our price range. We also tried the golf 2.5, which i liked a lot, but she doesn't want another golf. maybe I can talk her into a jetta, but i dunno. The golf was also a bit spendy.

We tried the Tuscon today. it's nice, but... it just kind of feels bland.

The Rogue was nice, but I'm not sure how I feel about their CVT transmission. Does anyone have any experience with it? i've googled it and it seems like there are issues with it that nissan is not acknowledging.

THat being said, is there anything else out there that we should check out? I'd rather get something a few years old and not get hit with the depreciation.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

The CRV is a really good vehicle.. Lots of trunk space.

I always thought crossovers were the likes of the Accord Crosstour, X6, EX, FX varieties.

I drive an RDX, decent power and SH-AWD has worked pretty well for the last few winters.
My fiance has a Rogue, great for city driving, a bit bland on the highway, especially with the CVT

The Tuscon would be my second choice, assuming the Tiguan is out of your price range.

Nissan Extended the CVT warranty on all cars to 2010. The new one's don't have extensions but I imagine the kinks are being worked out.

They aren't really common to fail but they want to protect the image of CVT.

The Rogue is a great choice. The RAV4's have a much higher transmission failure rate. I even hear the newer CRV's have failures as well.

Subaru Forester. Reliable as hell and cheap to maintain.

If that is the class you're looking for, try out the Mitsubishi Outlander S-AWC. We picked up a fully loaded one for 40k Tax in last January, and I'm quite happy with it.

We did go to one honda dealership last week (Lake Fraser Gate and Anderson road) and walked out in disgust. Nobody gave us the time of day... not even a hello or welcome.

Doesn't mean you shouldn't put some research into what vehicle best suits you and go to another honda dealership if it fits!

Fuck the car salesman...they are just a bunch of retards in suits with a highschool education. Just keep cycling through them until you get the best deal

Have you thought about the mazda CX-7?

It's got lots of space and it's pretty nice inside with plenty of power form the turbo. You can get a couple year old, fully loaded model easily in your price range.

The other criteria is that i needs to be fairly bulletproof and won't cripple me if i need to do basic maintenance.

re: honda. We did look at the crv and both felt that it looked fairly bland.

Ya, that's Calgary Honda for you. Don't exclude the CR-V simply due to that one shop. Okotoks Honda has a decent reputation and I think there are a few Beyonders that work at other Honda shops.
