    Default HD click-click-click

I'm using a 5400rpm SATAIII drive on my SATAII port, if this matters. it passed diagnostics such as WD data lifeguard, seatools, hdat2, and smart info seems normal.

when i cold boot my machine, it has made the click-click sound continuounsly on 3 occasions. once it gets into windows, i can't see the drive. after i cold boot it again, it's fine.

    it's done isnt' it ....?

sounds like the platter is screwed up. i had a WD that hdat2 "fixed" but i lost all my data. recovered some but it's useless. it seems really finicky so with the price of a new hdd i just bought a new one. dont want to risk it dying again.

Drive is on its last legs. Clone it, make a backup image or just pull the files you need off of it NOW.

Sata3 ports are redundant with mechanical hard drives anyway as they dont approach full sata2 speeds... esp with a 5400 drive.

Any noise is never a good thing. I just had a Seagate external HD, less than a year old go tits up. And this was one week after I ran it through two HD tests using Disk Warrior and Drive Genius. Now it sits all alone on the top shelf of a closet awaiting the day I can recover the data.

Right now is NOT a good time to have a HDD fail, prices are crazy stupid cuz of the thailand floods.

The drive is definatelly going. Backup you shit fast and send it in for warranty.

Much faster if you RMA it yourself vs having MemEx do it. I've had turnaround times as short as 2 weeks.

I just RMAed with Seagate and they have two options, you pay moneys to send it to seagate on your own terms in your own box, or there is the "advanced" option which is basically $10usd and they ship you a new drive first and a prepaid label, you pack your dead drive into the box that they sent you the replacement in, attach the label and send it off. At first I was just going to ship it myself, but then realized it is cheaper and much more convenient to pay the $10 up front. They send it via 2 day UPS option out of ontario. Mine should be here today, was shipped out yesturday morning, RMA placed on monday.

ya ... you have to pay yourself for hitachi. i would've never picked hitachi if it wasn't for the price at that time (~$160)
