    Default Video Card purchasing help

So I've seriously neglected my video card for several years, as I haven't played any games on it for a long, long time. Now that I'm enjoying StarWars:TOR, I really need a new one.

I really have no idea what I'm looking for though, never have with vid.cards. What's a decent deal right now that will play SW at highest detail levels? Don't need anything like Tuner in/out, dual screen, or anything. Just a PCI-E, 1xDVI out, and maybe a HDMI out as well.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

I used the TomsHardware video card charts, and the BF3 specific video card comparison when I tried to decide on what card to buy.

If you're like me and it's been that long since you bought a video card, keep in mind you may need a new power supply as well.

Next gen cards are coming out and the passing gen's are trickling down in price.

In order to stay future proof you need to go a little higher than midgrade. So a 570 Nvidia or a 6950 1/2gb will hold you over.

The 560ti or the 6870 are plenty powerful but will show their age as the next gen comes in.

I'm super happy with my 560ti but I bought it a year ago and its not going to be as strong in the next year.

I'm loving my 6950. It's a huge pig to fit in a case but my god it is powerful. And can I unlocked it to function as a 6970.

Any video cards in the mid to high range will have dual/triple monitor support and will have DVI/HDMI ports anyway.

Last years high end cards are probably the best value right now if you don't want to go completely nuts on a video card.

I got a 560gtx ti for 179 on sale @ ncix a while back and for the price... Well I just don't think it can be beat.

That being said, the 9950/9970 570GTX are optimal, but much more costly.

However I've seen older 470GTXs being blown out and that's a stellar card, faster than the 560ti (previous gen to the 570)

I've got a GTX 460, it's still decent but I'm hoping to pick up an 6950 for cheap when the new 7xxx series is released...

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'll grab this one tomorrow. A little more money than I wanted to spend, but what's and extra $80 really. At least it'll be good for a few more years.

Just got to crack my case and make sure I've got the power supply for it. That'll be the bigger deciding factor, lol.

    The pricier, the better.

Actually ended up buying this one. My power supply is only 500W, and I didn't want to spend even more on a bigger one, or overtax the current with the newest gen cards.

Still an amazing difference though. Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

the 6850 is definitely the "Sweet spot" for price to performance in the current generation. I run two of them in CrossFire and have all eye candy on in SWTOR running at 2560x1600. It's lovely

Out of curiosity, how would my existing 5770 compare to the 6850?

It's a step down, but not enough that you should upgrade.

Do you have multiple monitors or one monitor with that resolution?
