Brownsville school district officials said administrators immediately called police after the student brandished a weapon about 8 a.m., shortly after classes started at Cummings Middle School. When police arrived, the student “engaged” the officers and was shot, district spokeswoman Drue Brown said in an emailed statement.

So the student had a gun... the article just said he was armed and not until the third last paragraph did it say that he was armed with a gun.

Ashton Dominguez, 15, an eighth grader, said he knew the teen and that he played sports and was in the band. That morning, the student was involved in a fight and was taken, along with his opponent, to the principal's office, Dominguez said. Shortly afterward, he heard three shots coming from the hallway. The school immediately went on lockdown and five or 10 minutes later students heard police in the hallways, Dominguez said.

I don't see why this is a tragedy. Bring a gun to school at brandish it at police, you're going to get your ass shot. This police officer is a hero, I don't care if the kid was ten, twelve, fourteen, whatever. Thank God he didn't kill any other students.
