Default Dog owners, would you do this???

Disclaimer: I've never owned a dog, so I'm just curious on some insights, hence starting a thread, I am NOT stating facts what's right or wrong, just asking here

Had to run some errands, parked my car and went to 3 stores (instead of driving all over the parking lot)... after the 3rd store (just a rough back tracking when I got to the shopping area), an hour has lapsed.

Still noticed a puppy tied to a tree, is it common to tie a puppy up like this? COMPARED WITH tieing ur pet right in front of the store you're going in, so for one discourages puppy theifs, for two nobody will think you forgot about him... No cars around him/her that seems to be the owners, it was pretty cute too.

Anyways, in the end I had to leave, but informed one of the stores (the last visit) that there was a puppy tied to a tree unattended. (just in case someone forgot him??? )

Just curious... IMO, IF I was the owner, I wouldn't tie him in the middle of nowhere in the lot like that... that's just me tho.

For sure would not do that in a public place.

I leave my dog on a leash on my front porch, as he likes to stay outside, and I live in a new area and don't have a fence. Anytime he wants in he will just bark.

But out in the middle of a public place, there is no way.

Me either. I've never tied up my dog outside a store like that. On the flip side, I can understand someone taking their dog out for a walk and stopping at a gas station or wherever to grab milk and tying him up for 2 minutes...

An hour in the middle of a parking lot sure is pushing it.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

I would not do this, but I also treat my dog better than some people treat their kids.

I would, but my dog went batshit and barked up a storm every time I tried, so I don't.

NO, that is a pure ignorant dog owner. Like I say 90% of the dog owners in calgary shouldn't own dogs....

My lil guy gets the best of the best sometimes. Top quality food. Toys every month.

If I'm going out to run errands, or what not, I just leave my dog at home. No sense in bringing him with me where I go.

But yeah as stated, someone prolly abandoned it. Got the puppy as an Xmas gift from someone and now doesn't want it anymore.

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

You don't leave your dog tied-up unattended in a public area. Some one can steal your dog. Some one can feed your dog whatever. The dog may hurt someone trying to defend itself. Way too many reasons.

I'm pretty sure it's against the bylaw too.

Not a great idea to leave the dog that long unattended in a public place - as has been said. However...

A dog will handle being in a confined area like that for longer than you'd think without being upset about it. Many times a dog is quite happy being out there like that and just wants to be outside. The biggest issue for them is that they typically expect to be with the owner at that time, and might have some sort of separation anxiety.

My biggest concerns are: a) How long was the dog left alone like that, and b) What kinds of things did or could the dog experience. Kids might come by and taunt/torment the dog. Is the dog scared of passing people and/or passing vehicles? Might someone steal the dog?

So really, this *may* not be as big of a deal as people are making it out to be. But at the end of the day, I wouldn't leave my dog alone out in public for more than a few minutes.

Maybe he was a bad dog and he's on time-out?

An hour is extreme. And people do ditch dogs they no longer want in this manner.

I do not leave my dogs tied up anywhere-purebred showdogs and part of our family. They would be all to happy to walk off with someone who talked nice to them and gave them a treat.

As well they are fair game for anything-someone to kick them or feed them something, someone else who walks by with an un-behaved dog, a little kid, getting loose and leaving......etc.

Who gives their dog a time-out in the middle of a parking lot? Yard maybe, but nowhere with moving vehicles.

Where I go, dog goes. If dog not allowed, I rather leave him @ home. Tying him up outside, I worry too much someone may take him.
