Metre is used as the standard spelling of the metric unit for length in all English-speaking nations except the USA, which uses meter

Um no. It is only in America when a unit of distance is spelled Meter.Originally posted by AndyL

Canadian spelling is goofy:
Centre
Metre
As somebody that uses the word center on a daily basis, I had it beaten into me over the past few years by a coworker (with a british background, not french) to use centre

IF you are describing a location or origin, you use Center.
ie: I am standing in the center of the room.
IF you are describing a place of gathering then you use centre.
ie: I am standing in The Drop in Centre.
Everyone bastardizes the fuck out of that word though to the point where it doesn't even matter.
I thought you were making fun of the sanding truck since there is no snow on the road.

Metre is a measure of distance.

Yeah I never even noticed this at all. This has been a bit of an eye opener.
