I bought a 2011 ecoboost about 3 months ago. I test drove both the 5.0 and ecoboost quite a bit. The power of the ecoboost is what really made up my decision. Has about 11 000km on it right now and absolutely love it. Smooth, quiet ride with more than enough power when I need it.

I work out at the rigs so I do a lot of highway driving + lease roads. My mileage since I purchased the truck (11000km) is about 14.0 L/100KM.

My mileage for highway driving with cruise control is somewhere around 12.5L/100km.

Try them both out and see which you like better, but IMHO +1 the eco.

I know this thread is a bit old.

Got a 2012 EcoBoost F-150 and put 3'500km in under a week, over 1000km the day I got the keys (O&G Work Vehicle).

I think the 14l/100km is probably a more realistic range from my experiences and the posting in this thread. My best was about around 12l/100km (all highway without excessive speeding).

I gotta say that's pretty impressive mileage for a fullsize truck. My wife barely manages 12 L/100km in her 3.0 v6 fusion.

I have. Comparison for you. Very close vehicles. My dad has the 5.0 reg cab short box. My mom has the ecoboost. Both 2012s. Dad gets better gas mileage both highway and city also while pulling a trailer has better mileage.
I wanted the ecoboost when it was out also bu I think the 5 is a more trusted and proven motor. IMO

    I have '11 FX4 supercrew,shortbed ,5.0, 3.73 rear end.

Last week I drove to Invermere and back (606 kms) at 90-110 kph and averaged 11.2 L/100kms .

The ecoboost has more torque ,but for every day driving, the 5.0 and ecoboost are virtually identical.

If you ever actually want to move anywhere though, you'll be sucking back premium like it's going out of style.

Why would you put premium gas in it?

    Ford recommends regular.

Now for me personally putting my cash up it would be 5.0 all the way. Also to note (not sure if I am right) the 96L tank was usually for short beds and the 136L tank was for the regular->long beds. At least int he 2004-2008 MY.

Overall the Eco is still a great engine but I know they couldnt get rid of 5.0's and it was a 2 month order to get a ecoboost. Performance, tech, and brag factor the ecoboost. A work truck 5.0.
I've got a 12 F150 with the 5.0. Great motor, I regularily get over 20 mpg on the highway (11.5L/100 between Invermere and Calgary last weekend).

You can get the 136L tank with most configurations. It usually comes with the max tow package or in the higher trims. Mine's a platinum, 3.55 gear, 5.5 foot bed and has the 136L tank.

Ecoboost is their tow motor and makes a ton of torque. If you are towing go that route, if not, enjoy the noises the coyote makes.

Well, I have had my 2012 F150 super crew ecoboost for a month now, and I am pretty happy with it.

On the highway, I am getting 11L/100kms, and in the city I am getting 14L/100kms.

Love the fact I can put 87 octane in it, and Ford recommends it, but they also say you can run 91. Couple that with the fact they recommend 5w30 oil and not some crazy synthetic is awesome too.

I am still trying to figure out the maintenance schedule, The Ford sales guy says oil change every 8000kms, but I think the service manual says every 14000kms. I have just about 5000kms, and the onboard computer says oil life is currently at 74%...

Theres a ton of Ecoboost fuel economy hype being fed. To get the best economy with the EB you have to get the 3:15 ratio, throw the 3:73 in there so you can tow and its fuel economy is worse than the 5.0. Plus the EB is a $2000+ option over the 5.0, not to mention the guarantee of higher maintenence and costly repairs a complex engine like this is sure to have as it ages.

The EB option is $1200, at least on the truck I bought brand new last month.

With the 3.13 rear end you get the improved gas milage, and with the higher ratios, it is about on par with the V8 lineup, but with better HP and TQ and payload numbers.

Honestly, IMHO, the EB plant is the better way to go all around.

after popping a new ford engine at 36k kms with similar differences between car computer/dealer/ford... listen to the dealer. they are the ones putting the actual oil in at our actual elevation and weather conditions

You also have to keep in mind the type of oil you use plays a huge factor in the service intervals. You cannot use cheap ass oil in this engine. Oil technology has come along way in the last few years and one size fits all does not apply any more. Ford spec says to use premium 5w-30 synthetic that meets WSS-M2C946-A specification. I agree with rat fink that Canada falls under server service, and that's oil changes every 8000km.
Be careful off roading because splash from pig puddles or mud pits have been known to crack hot turbos.

My dad bought a eb, he loves it. He is getting 24mpg on the hi way. But he is also a old man and drives as such. Its just like any turbo engine if you dive this shit out of it its going to get worse mileage than a big block but if you have a light foot you get awesome mileage.

yeah, I actually checked the manual, and figured it out.

My EB engine says to change it every 16,000kms, but it says I can use regular 5w30.

I decided to change the oil at 5000kms and went through the manual.

Kinda neat. oil changes every 16,000kms, can run regular oil, and 87 octane. Manual says though that doing oil changes every 10,000kms is recommended, synthetic 5w30 oil, and 87 octane unless I am towing, then I can use premium.

If Alberta is considered "severe duty", I am thinking about starting to use mid grade all the time now.

Ill try and not sound like a die hard dodge cause I'm not I love both trucks but I bought a 2012 ram sport crew cab with all options other than ram boxes. For 38500 plus tax. I get similar fuel mileage to those posted. If you compare a ford fx4 to mine what's the price 50000. It might be that much after tax though. My question is do you guys see the money as well spent?? I'm coming from a 2004 fx4 the only reason I went for the dodge was the price and they were very comparable in all factors.

bought it with employee pricing in effect, they gave me a 3k hail damage credit, and I negotiated some more off it. The hail damage does not bother me as it is barely noticeable, and I know a guy . Added a couple other options and it came out to $29,8XX, and with taxes and the works, came out to something like $32,2XX out the door.

I should point out though that the truck is not the true FX4, but it has the FX4 option package on it.
