Default Looking for new counter tops

Looking to update our kitchen with new countertops and cabinets.

Our counters total around 55 sq ft

Don't want to break the bank, we're on a kinda tight budget, and we plan to turn our current house into a rental within a year or two, so don't want anything really high end.

Has anyone replaced or gotten a new counter lately?

What did you pay per sq ft? What type and how thick of stone did you get?

Are you happy with it and would you recommend the company that did it?

Stone? Don't know what your budget is, but if you're thinking about stone, you're looking at a minimum of around $4,000. To replace both cabinets and tops with stone, I doubt you'd get it done under $10,000

Try an auction... my parents got some granite slabs for super super cheap.. less than what they paid for the new sink! The colors are limited, depends on what you value more.. color or money!

I'd be interested in that too. So you buy a big slab of granite at auction. It still has to be templated, cut, polished and then installed. If you ask a 3rd party company to do all that without supplying their own product, they're gonna charge you through the nose. Don't know really how much savings you would have in the end.

I've discovered there is different thickness and quality of granite available.
Anything from 2cm thin from Kokomo for $1900 installed to what Dave mentioned for more than double that.

Can you provide anymore details on the auction? How big of slab, how thick and what was purchase prove? Where is thins auction ?

You have helped me in the past, so I have no issues helping you. I suggest getting your hands on 1 1/4" material. I can do your templating and I can see about fabbing it for you in my buddies shop. You and I can do the install.

The granite, for my new bar in my basement, plus vanity was 4800 installed... shits not cheap. thats builders grade, but was the thickest stuff they sold. went through jade stone. dunno if i'd recommend them though.

You are correct good sir. it had to be cut, polished and installed. My dad got it done through a friend. The guys were so nice they even cut my parents a matching cutting board with some left over granite!

Also, apologies for getting some people excited but it turns out that the auction my dad got the granite from was a granite shop that went bankrupt!! Good timing I guess..

I paid $60/sq ft for my granite countertops 3cm thick. cutting the sink and faucet holes was another $150.

very happy with everything. this was for my rental, so price was the biggest thing for me. i got a quote from granite direct, and had it price matched at victory granite.

Terrible idea, although I see lots of people do this. So horrible for your knives.

I used floform they're in NE Calgary.

There's lots of other options if you check out their show room besides going granite.

    Sterling silver (92.5%)?

Unlike every single rock based countertop, it has a chance of greatly increasing in value. Silver is of course naturally antimicrobial and can be kept from tarnishing with a slight electrical current.

I know of one person who did their countertop in sterling silver, he sold it, retired on it and went to a cheap piece of rock later. If you are going to spend $10G's on a counter its not as farfetched as some think.

If price is really an issue go with the laminate the peices at home depot. Probably $200 in countertops and get the company they use to make the cuts for maybe another $150.
Thats what I would do for a rental. It will seem nice for the first few years.
