Merge everything or you'll split up as you are not a team, applies to rock bands as well. I keep a smallish stash for goodies though. Really tight tracking of expenses and savings using software and apps. You'd be amazed how much you spend on stuff you really do not need, remember or like. For example, we were eating out about 8x/month, cut it down to 2-3x/month and we can now drink far nicer wine with our meals at home. Also, throw the other remaining bit towards savings.

    App used: HomeBudget

    Thems the rules.

Keep it separate. That's how I like it.

Keep it separate, we split it up somewhat:

    - I pay the mortgage, property tax, and major purchases (extending the deck, exposed patio, etc)

    - She pays the house insurance, food, utilities, and cable

We have a hybrid system - we both have our own accounts, and then a joint account where all of our bills, vacation, property tax, etc come out of. We both invest on the side. The rest is play money

This is how I would do it if ever.

I'm still quite young though so I can admit I'm quite greedy. Maybe that will change in the long run but I don't see it happening.

Merged. Wife is the accountant who keeps track of all the finances so it works well that way to keep track of everything and keeps me in line.

We each haveour own accounts and have a third account that has a small savings fund. For the bills she looks after mortgage, house and pet insurance. I take care of energy bill, condo fees, property tax, cell bill.

We keep them separate. For the bills we just separate them so we each pay the same percentage of our monthly earnings. She likes to keep it separate just as much as i do.

    Completely separate...kind of?

We have a shared credit card that is mine and I pay for fully, even if my wife uses it, she doesn't use it alot (hang out with a friend and buy something every once in a while, $50 ish per month at most)

I use the credit card almost exclusively for every purchase, which gives me a nice line by line output of my spending. I have my personal chequeing and savings accounts as well, and manager all the money in there.

My wife just finished school but once she starts working, she will contribute a portion of her earnings into a shared savings account, which we use to pay off the house loan (not a morgage).

She has her own chequeing and savings account as well and uses those every once in a while, but like I said, she doesn't really go out too much right now so the limited funds she has in her accounts have lasted her a very long time.

    No forever alone option?

For me, I'd think I'd base it on whether there was one breadwinner and one homemaker/student/low income (shared), and if both had their own careers (individual accounts with a joint account).

    pet insurance?

In my house, it's similar, except I pay mortgage, utilities, cell, house phone, satellite, etc, and she lives here . She takes care of the house and my daughter though lol which is priceless.

This is how we are as well.

The first say...5 years we were together, it was all seperate and we paid our share. But when we started to buy things together more and more as a couple, we realized my money was hers and hers was mine...so it got to a point where we just kept everything in one account and didn't bother with who is paying what now, really doesn't matter when you're married after a while.

Also I was pretty bad bad with money before, so when we joined our accounts together, she helped me to learn to manage and budget.

But i guess in teh case of us, when we came into the marriage, we both didn't have anyhting as we had just finished school and had loans outta our ass. So we were able to buy the house, the car, everything else together, so that makes it a lot easier than those who have assests and get into a relationship with someone that has fuck all.

Yeah well I wonder how they get the soft flowing caramel inside the Caramilk bar but you don't see me making a god damn thread about it. Slap your wife Baygirl, straighten him out.

My wife and I have individual accounts, and know what we are responsible for paying. She transfers half the mortgage payment to my account every month, I take care of the house bills, she takes care of the food.

Works out well and we are both decent with our finances so we really have no fights regarding money.

Granted, I paid 80% for our 1 month vacation overseas, our dog (yeah, he was $1400) and our wedding, but I had multiple vehicles I didn't need so it made sense to sell them off for the betterment of our new combined life together. Honestly, a little hard not to be bitter about giving up the sports cars, but with a baby on the way I guess that is the life I decided to have anyway.

This exactly. If we were completely joint she wouldn't have any purses, and that would cause problems.

We have always kept ours separate. When my wife was working she would just pay portions of the bills out of her own account, but now that she is home raising our kids I take care of everything.

She likes to spend money, I don't. We could never blend finances. I would go crazy.

My handling of this particular business has kept us out of debt with bills always paid, lots of food in the house, money into savings and everyone is happy. I think this system works great in our relationship.
