Default Clutch catching to early? Need info!!!

    I'm looking at picking up a 1990's Toyota SR5 4x4 truck.

I was looking at one, but there is an issue with the clutch and i was wondering i can get some insight here on what the prob may be.

The clutch, when i push it all the way in, shift the truck in gear and let it out, i let it out say...an inch tops and then it grabs. I'm familiar with a clutch that is on the way out where you have to physically almost let it out all the way before it catches, that usually means either an adjustment is needed or the clutch is toast correct?

So what does it mean when it catches only after letting it out about an inch?

    Also I think it's a hydraulic clutch.

Just need to know if this means potentially it needs a new clutch and what not, or perhaps just some sort of adjustment?

    input/feedback appreciated.

    - Thanks.

Yeah well I wonder how they get the soft flowing caramel inside the Caramilk bar but you don't see me making a god damn thread about it. Slap your wife Baygirl, straighten him out.

I know nothing about toyota trucks, but some more modern cars have self adjusting clutches. My car is the same at 105,000km

I don't think this one's self adjusting o_O it is an older truck though. i just need this to haul shit around for summer while re-doing my deck and back yard. i just don't want to spend any significant money on it.

You can adjust the clutch master cylinder to catch later, it sounds like it doesnt have the appropriate free play needed.

    Good clutches release early.

Likely what happened is it was adjusted at the end of the old clutches life to compensate for wear and was never adjusted back to proper specifications.

Ideally they should never be adjusted.

You may also be overthinking and it sounds fine in my opinion as long as the clutch is relatively new.

Cool. I bought the truck lastnight, tough to drive when the catch point is sooo low.

I also noticed the cylinder was low on fluid so i topped it up. Didn't seem to make a difference. I'll cehck this weekend and see if i can adjust the clutch so it catches a bit higher.

Just need this beast for the summer to do some work on my backyear, then it's up for sale.

Age of the clutch, I dunno. I jsut know the owner said he had the tranny rebuilt a year ago.

If the fluid was low, I'd do a flush first and see if that helps

Yeah it was under minimum and super dirty. I'll be flushing both the brake and clutch fluid this weekend for sure.
