    Default Renting Downtown

A friend of mine and me are looking to rent a place downtown come may 1. Having issues finding nice places. Most of the places we look at are dumps. The only one we really liked was rented by the time I responded.

Anyone have any hints on where to look online or paper or what? Thanks.

I am finding the same thing as you. I have looked at lots of places over the last little while and while I've come upon a few places and put in apps and waiting to hear back I find so many places are just absolute dives.

The other issue I find is that people are asking far to much for what they think is nice. Also it seems as if bedrooms are more important than living/kitchen space and you'll go look at a 2 bedroom place and while the rooms are nice you have no living room or kitchen.

I've been basically looking at the normal places and if there are no pictures I won't even bother looking as I have done that a couple of times and they were are dumps.

If you want to live in downtown you have to make compromises in your spatial expectations. That goes for pretty much every metropolitan area in the world. What you see in a newly built house in the boonies is not what you’re going to find in a 50 year old rental unit in the core / beltline. If you want something top notch in downtown you’re going to pay an arm and a leg for it. I rent in the core and nothing beats the location and convenience. I was willing to make that trade-off and have no regrets.

There is a difference between spatial trade off and paying 1800 to live in a shit hole that I wouldn't pay 1000 to live in.

I've too found the rental cost for shitholes downtown to be absurd. Have you guys checked surrounding areas like sunnyside, mission, connaught etc?

I lived in Panorama Court for 2 or 3 years, it was good. I paid $1400 for a 2 bedroom plus $100 for underground parking. A guy named Chris runs the building, he's awesome.

What I meant by spatial was not just in terms of area but in terms of quality as well. When you live in downtown the bonus you get is location, not quality of living space. If your number one priority is the quality of living space you trade off the location and live in the boondocks. I mean, in Manhattan they’re renting out entire apartments no bigger than your bedroom right now for 2-3 grand per month and people are scooping those up. They’re basically no different than a prison cell. The entire thing is location.

You mean you can't find a quality place to rent in a good location for a reasonable price? In a city with more money than brains?

    I don't believe you.

Thanks Harv. I don't normally do rentals. But for beyonders I can try go help them out. Pm me your details , budget and expectations and I can put a page out in my office, most realtors have rentals.

That or I'll buy something and rent it to you.

Glad I'm not the only one who's thinking this. Downtown is so full of garbage.

Is it too much to ask for granite and stainless steel 2 bedroom for $2k? lol
