I bought a ticket for last week's $356MM. Now that it is over half a billion dollars...maybe I should buy another one.

Apparently the jackpot is so large it actually makes mathematical sense to buy a ticket!
I'm gonna get a ticket or two this afternoon, I'll let y'all know how it turns out haha.

If you had $176 million, you could buy all the number combinations and net $117 million.Originally posted by Eleanor
Explain please.
The problem is that it takes 28 years to actually fill out all the numbers in the bubbles and there isn't enough lottery paper in the US to actually print all the tickets.
Also, if you split the jackpot with just 1 winner, you would lose $30 million.
I read that this morning on the shitter, but I forget where.
I got a ticket... crossing my fingers!

As impressive as it is, huge jackpots don't encourage me to buy a ticket any more than a lower jackpot.
Reason being: Your chances of winning are the same. And no matter what, you win an absurd amount of money. I can't imagine the desire to spend any more than 3-4 million on myself and family.
Anything over that all goes to charity anyway. (Though it would be a very gratifying experience spending the rest of my life helping others)
A friend of mine is in NYC and picked up a ticket for me.
they tax lottery winning in the states though, so you are not actually walking away with $540mOriginally posted by Kloubek

you might say you dont need more than $4m now, but i think you may change your mind once you had $100m+ its never enough once you have it. i bet at one point you thought $50k a year was enough, once you broke $50k, $70k was enough... etc, etc
life can be really expensive if you want it to be. yachts dont fill themselves with fuel
Nice, just got another one.
$10 to win half a billion ($293M if you take it all at once and pay Obama his share).

If any American Beyonder wants to pick me up a $10 ticket for this and mail it to me before the big draw, I'll paypal them $15... just for kicks.
edit: oh shit, it's for tonight. Nevermind
Well if it rolls over, the offer is still up.
The big draw is in less than 12 hours. I don't know how it would be possible to even overnight a ticket to you.Originally posted by Tik-Tok

why would you need it in hand before the draw? is there a 3 day time limit to claim your prize or something
In the US its a 30% hit on lottery winnings over $600.Originally posted by benyl

So if the jackpot was $540M, they would go home with $378M
I occasionally buy lottomax tickets when they have the extra $1 million draws. I figure when they have 20, then your odds increase to 21/85 900 584 or 1/4 090 504.Originally posted by Kloubek

If you take it all at once, they calculate NPV and you get less.

The one thing you are forgetting, is that the odds of someone else hitting the numbers with you are greater as well.Originally posted by project240

1 in 4 million... so you're saying there's a chance...
I was watching a news article about the current draw, your chances of winning are 1 in 175 million I believe. Anyways, with so many people buying tickets, there is a greater chance of you sharing the winning with someone.
They also said there is about a 5% chance of no one hitting the jackpot tonight, and that if it rolled over it would be close to 975million dollars.
I would be very very very surprised if 1 ticket wins the jackpot tonight, most likely then not, it will be a split pot.
the other thing to take in mind, is that if you buy EVERY combination, you will also get 50 (or however many numbers they use there) times the second place prizes, and exponentially more of each prize down the chain as well. A group in Australia did it for one of the megamillions jackpots 15 years ago or something like that...they chose a state that allowed computer generated slips to be used to help speed up the process.
