    Arrow - Math Problem -

    This is probably really easy for some of you, please help me:

    A furniture company has been producing 2320 chairs a day working two shifts. The second shift has produced 60 chairs fewer than four-thirds of the number of chairs produced by the first shift. Determine the number of chairs produced by the second shift.

    Here's how to do it:

    First, let:
    X denote the first shift
    Y denote the second shift

    In total, the two shifts added together produce 2320, so:

    X+Y = 2320

    Now, because the second shift (Y) makes 60 less than 4/3's of the first (X), this can also mean whatever Y makes plus 60 is the same as 4/3's of X, denoted:

    Y+60 = 4/3X

    Then, to solve for one variable, just move the rest over to the other side. For instance, solving for the second shift (Y) can give you:

    Y = 4/3X - 60

    Then substitute for Y:

    X + (4/3X - 60) = 2320

    And solve...

    Answer:
    First shift: 1300
    Second shift: 1020

    I basically did the same thing, but my answer is slightly different..

    x + y=2320
    (4/3)x - 60 = y
    x + (4/3)x - 60=2320
    (7/3)x = 2380
    x = 1020

    (4/3)(1020) - 60 = y
    y=1300

    I have 1020 for the first shift (x) and 1300 for the second shift (y).

    Oh yeah, you're right. Just got the variables mixed up.
