A buddy who is getting AC installed is telling me permits are not needed. It sounds like they are trying to screw him by not pulling it and giving him a lower price.

A&E pulled the permit for me, and they installed the breaker also, just as an FYI.

My AC was installed by Gavin five years ago. I'm getting my permits now since I'm selling the house. I'm not expecting any surprises however we shall see. At the time Gavin saved me a significant amount of money.

Gavin did mine 5 years ago too. He/We didn't pull a permit but since we had to get a new RPR anyways because it was outdated, the AC was marked in the report. It got stamped by the city and the we sold the house with no issues.

I didn't think that a homeowners permit allows one to tie into the panel...everything up to and including adding the breaker but not physically tying it energizing it? You'd still need a master electrician to do so would you not?

^ When I was doing my basement I did all the electrical, including tying in to the panel, under the homeowners permit.

Nope, a home owner can tie right into the panel. I've done it several times. You only need a master electrician to do anything with power coming into the house.

Huh...my boss was able to install everything in his basement but was told that he required a master electrician to do the final terminations. Now I'm not sure why he couldn't do it all himself...

Sorry haven't logged into Beyond in a while...

Gavin is coming today to my install! Should've been tomorrow but looks like he double booked me (and Voodoo?) so I got mine a day early. Yippee! I hope Jordan is getting some kind of commission cause he seems to be pulling a lot of Beyond business hahaha.

I am going with a Tempstar 3.5T 16 seer unit. All in cost is $4,100. It's on a the high end of the spectrum but I like the idea of the no hassle initial 5 year warranty + 5 year labour.

When I got quotes, they were all over the map. Here's some, from low to high (add tax to all prices):

- $2,600 for a 3.5T Goodman VSX 13 seer from a Kijiji dude baesd out of Didsbury - He did provide some references so probably OK
- $3,300 for a 3.5T Lennox from Quality Heating & A/C (don't know model specs)
- $3,500 for a 3.5T Lennox from Arpi's (don't know model specs)
- $3,550 for a 3.5T Bryant 13 seer from some shady guy
- $3,600 for a 3T Lennox ACX14 from Calgary Home Comfort (includes permit)
- $4,400 for a 3T Lennox XC15 from Calgary Home Comfort (includes permit)

Personally I wouldn't go through Costco. I talked to one of their outsourced installers (Service Experts) and they readily admit Costco is more expensive than their own identical install and quoted "around $4,000".

In the end I went with Gavin because of the good reviews and price before tax was actually very good for a 16 seer unit ($3,900). My second choice was going to be Calgary Home Comfort. The guy who came by to do the quote (Shawn) was very professional and knowledgable and took the time to educate me and I highly recommend him.

How big is your house? Top floor only or whole house?

Well I just went to costco to ask about their "deal" and the guy said for 1.5T it was 2999$ and then he said 3T was 3000$ so fuck knows whats up with that. He also said they have to go do estimates before quoting real prices and they are the installers.

This is correct. Homeowner can pull an electrical permit for everything except the service itself. This is the case for Calgary not sure about Airdrie. I will say this, Airdrie has a couple of hard asses for electrical inspectors

Before I ask the next question I'm not trying to stir up a hornets nest so everyone just take a deep breathe. Has Gavin set up his own company and is now doing this work through his own company? I think it's a legitimate question to ask of anyone you're going to hand over this much money too and expect a warranty from. Ok now you can all fill my PM box with hate mail.

I only dealt with Authorized Dealers and my install is pretty straight forward. I wont be dealing with someone who isn't an AD and can't perform warranty work.

I don't know how he operates his business, but I know of him in the trade.
Being an authorized dealer really doesn't have anything to do with the warranty aspect, more of what brand name a company can sell and install,and getting the brand name to give an installer some street cred via marketing material. One or two manufacturers do restrict non dealers to lower tier machinery. Once a machine is in place however, anyone with a relevant ticket, or in the case of some manufacturers lately, a heartbeat, can do the manufactures warranty service. There are "authorized dealers" out there installing equipment using labor with no trade tickets as well..
