Default How much to tip in Cancun?

Can someone give me a really quick run down on how much to tip, the average amount for Cancun? I'm going this weekend for a week (destination wedding) and want to be on good terms with the staff.

    For example:

    - Guy that takes my luggage
    - Guy that calls me a cab
    - Cab driver
    - Hotel maid
    - Room service
    - Bartender
    - Restaurants

It's all inclusive AFAIK but you still gotta tip.

Anything else I'm forgetting? I'm probably just gonna pull cash from the ATM so I get pesos? $1CDN=$12 pesos approximately.

    TIA!!!

have you not learned anything from the tipping thread?

dont be average, thats not how you get good service

i would take a bunch of american singles, find your favorite bar at the resort and tip $20 on your first drink... after this tip normal. you will notice that they are now reaching for a different bottle when they serve you

Here is what I did in Cabo a few months ago

    - Guy that takes my luggage - $5 (was a very long walk from lobby to room)
    - Guy that calls me a cab - $0 cabs lined up at hotel

    - Cab driver - $5 as he was very help full and chatty

    - Hotel maid - $5 so she could leave extra snacks and drinks in the fridge every day

    - Room service - $0 never ordered any

    - Bartender - MOST IMPORTANT person, I gave him $10 on my first drink so he would remember me. Buddy served me top shelf booze all day long.

    - Restaurants - At the buffet I would leave $1 or $2 to the waiter that cleared my empty plates. At the a la carts, I was tipping $5 as the service was very good and on a few occasions I asked the waiter for extra deserts or food

I'm not sure I've never been. Are the tipping standards the same as here since Cancun is a destination spot?

i cant talk about the town itself, but at an all inclusive what is above is accurate. i havent been in a while, but USD (was) is king.

when everything is included tipping isnt the norm except for what was listed above. normally for the maid though i have only ever left a tip at the end as a thank you for not stealing my shit

Most people were tipping in Peso's in Mexico when I was there . Plus peso's are plastic (ie:waterproof) haha. Probably preferred for the swim up bar. We only had USD which was fine.

We usually tipped the bartender $5 at the beginning of the day if we were chilling at the pool/beach all day and then more throughout the day depending on what we had with us.

Restaurants a couple bucks each meal.

Housekeeping a couple bucks each day.

I always tip in USD. I will agree with the numbers posted above. I give singles out pretty freely. Bartender always get a large tip at the beginning of the night.

I don't tip big on my first drink - usually 2 or 3 guys serving each bar. After a couple drinks I figure our who the nicest and most energetic bartender is and then tip him big. He'll be your best friend after that!

Don't forget to tip your maid. When I was in Mexico a couple years ago, the hotel maids always folded some extra towels into animals (elephant, birds, etc) and left them on your bed. After I left $20 for tip on day, I came back and they made a 4 foot person out of towels, they even used my shoes for his legs and put my golf hat on his head. I thought that was hilarious!

It doesn't matter what you tip with (Peso/US).

The day we got to the resort we tipped the bartender about $100 for the 7 of us on the first day and little tips here and there throughout that period. We were treated like absolute royalty. Worth every penny spent. People were complaining about the bartenders having bias' towards Canadians.

Enjoy your trip, it is a really fun place.

Tip Room cleaner first and last nights ~$10

Tip bartender $20 first day and $10 last day.

For the 4 times I have been there this has been more then enough and allowed me to be treated like royalty haha.

i tipped probably $300 over a week in Mexico last time I went to the bartenders at the main bar (not to mention the other ones). No extra service, no premium booze. I tip down there because I know they don't make much but it would've been nice if I received better service.

I also left $10 a day for room service and got nothing extra, in fact room service got worse from day 1-7.

Where I stayed as well the golf cart drivers on the resort stopped taking my tips at a certain point, so who knows????

So hit and miss, I see some people said it made a difference?

If I were you and don't tip based on giving tips to less fortunate people, tip based ON service that you receive!

Well I'm going for a wedding, this is like a family vacation lol I probably won't be drinking much anyway. I'm not one of those guys who can take advantage of the all you can drink, all day and all week. That is I'll party hard for a night, get super drunk and then spending the entire week recovering. I do *hope* to connect with some random hottie. Who knows, you are on vacation, I'm on vacation, let's hookup!

    remember to get his name!

also, are you making the couple pay for your trip there? seeing as how they are inconveniencing you by making you take a trip to a warm, sunny, tropical place to hang out with friends...

I stayed at a pretty high end hotel and had some discussions with workers, in their honest opinion just tip something, even a dollar and thats more than enough to keep everyone happy. Being a vacation hot spot, they told me they get a lot of people from countries that don't tip at all so any amount is better than nothing.

Having said that, me and the gf were tipping $10 for some meals because the food and service was that good. Our general rule of thumb also was $1 for every two drinks and $5 for the cleaning lady which gets you extra goodies and gives you a bit of comfort that your stuff is taken care of.

    Ah I miss cancun now....
