    Default Looking for a Recommendation

Bad news from a buddy here in town - Needs a new/rebuild transmission on his BMW 545i, 2007 I believe w/ only 90,000kms

He was quoted $9k for a new one from BMW but the car is only worth ~20k so, that's understandably a tough pill to swallow.

Any help/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks guys/gals

His first mistake was going to the dealership...

Any reputable transmission shop should be able to rebuild it for far less than an OEM replacement.

Dealer remans are the absolute best. They are good quality with a good warranty. And usually are about the same price as a rebuild from a tranny shop. Imo, I would spend the 9 grand its worth it. This way you wont have a tranny shop rebuilding it 4 times. But if I were to recommend a shop it would be national transmission on macleod. But they may not touch it because its a bmw.

I'd get a low km's used transmission with 1 year warranty.

Rebuilding is touchy for transmission shops and german transmissions.

A re manufactured is increadibly expensive due to freight and materials.

    I'm sure there's a smashed 545 somewhere.

Thats where I took my Z4 to have the clutch replaced. I'd also recommend them. Import or not they really know their shit. No fuck ups whatsoever, they did a great job for $1100. Calgary BMW wanted $3k plus for it.

I am defn going to search around for a smashed one - good idea.

I will try the other trans shops recommended above.

Defn not taking it to a dealer to have a new trans installed.

    Thanks!

If BMW can't build a trans that lasts 90,000Km, why would you spend $9000 letting them try again?

Because bmw didnt build it in the first place. GM or ZF did. When you buy a dealer reman most of the time it has been updated to correct the weak points.

Don't need to go to a transmission place. Go to someone that works on BMW's such as Sheni or Alpine, they usually have sources to yards that have parts for sale and can do the install.

A 2007 550i (they stopped making the 545 after 2005) is probably worth closer to $30 if that's any consolation...

Car is out of warranty anyway - avoid the dealer at all costs.
You have a couple of photos that are great... you must be very good at photoshop!
