My dad worked oil in egypt for 2 years and i went with him once... all i can say is either go on a guided tour... or be a very very expirienced traveler. THe people are rude ruthless and just rip you off left and right... Only reason to go to egypt is the pyramids

Mo, my thoughts exactly, the people are like 20 years behind, don't have any manners and the food, well um my sister is a vegetarian and we ate McDonalds three times in 4 days..ugh...
The egyptology is certainly the main attraction there....oh and the craxy 3 level highways are an interesting sight....
And it's tooo f'ing hot there!!
Jaymez didn't you think it was gay that there was a KFC (or taco bell? I forgot) right behind you when you are facing the sphinx? Kind of ruins the whole historic feel...

Ya i thought it was funny with the Mcdicks and Taco Bell , as for the rude people , i didnt really get alot of those , i just got people who needed money or who offered 40 camels for my sister lol.
All you have to do is know how much to pay for certain things , and always haggle like a mother f^cker when it coems to a cab.

As for rude locals, that's a given in any country almost. When they see that you are from the western world, they immediately associate you with money and will try and double the price to get the most out of you.

what's the food like over there?....I've been wanting to go there for about the last 5 or 6 years now, but I've always chosen a different destination because I'm scared of the food. Is there 'normal' food available that isn't fastfood?

Ya alot of normal food , the food is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO good , just go to your hotel and ask about Restaurants and what not and they will tell you good ones ...
BUT Rule 1..
Carry alot of small change , you have to TIP everyone ( Bathroom, Porters , Cab , anyone that does something for you... just give them 1 or 2 egyptian pounds and they are happy. thats like 25 cents.
And also , buy bottled water , its cheap and clean.
