Prenups aren't even worth the time spent talking about them at the end of the day. Consult the top 3 lawyers and put them on retainer before you decide to break the news.

I'm intrigued by what happens if it is common law, the mortgage is not paid off. How much does the wife need to 'contribute' for it to be considered she gets half?

On a seperate note. So many stories of women purposly seeking out guys who work in the rigs back in the day. Marry them, pop out a baby and hit the divorce bell. There are books written on this for women on how to trap a guy earning lots of money.
Some of my old clients told me crazy stories about their divorces. I saw male clients that had been totally taken to the cleaners. Its almost a business.
I had one client who immigrated here, worked all his life and save. Then he finally managed to save up to start his own business. He was so proud and full of ambition. The joy in his eyes. His wife came by the office a week later and asked about bankruptcy insurance. I said there was no such thing. She looked at me like I was a idiot, refused to belive me and left. A week later we found out that his wife had filed for divorce. He came in to revise his insurance. I have never seen a man look so defeated and broken.

Another client of mine told me a story of how his wife wanted fake boobs. He said don't do it as they have a house, good life etc. Well she went and did it. The attention she got from that went to her head. She filed for divorce. He kept the house and paid her out. That worked in his favour (he also had offshore accounts she did not know about). But the moral of the story is... if your spouse wants fake tits. Consult a divorce lawyer first.

Are you asking for the pre-nup or is she?

    Either way, it's bad news.
Not true. I brought it up with mine a year or two into dating. We got married after 6 years of dating. A prenup is logical. Everyone in this thread is likely going to get divorced.

    BUMP

Any family law lawyers on the forum? Or at least have had experience with one? I have questions about prenups.

Also, has anyone ever filled in a AB prenuptial agreement online and then having it notarized somewhere locally?
    This doesn't sound solid.

In this regard a good accountant is much more important than a good lawyer
They go hand in hand. Your wife should never know everything.

I don't know if "contributing" is even a factor. What you came in with is yours, but any gains while you're together are 50/50, whether she put money into the home or not.

I used to have a connection with a group of maritimers who were living in Red Deer and Edmonton, all working in oil and making incredible amounts of money, but still had the naive, small town, maritime based perspective. So many of them were shacked up with hot chicks for 6 months, got pregnant/married and within 1-3 years, all were divorced and paying their ex large sums of money.

Doesn’t hurt, marrying someone who makes more than you works even better.

This is true. And common-law vs marriage is not a differentiator. Each spouse gets half of everything gained/gifted/earned starting on the day you start cohabitating, regardless of what label you put on your relationship. The law doesn't care if you're married or not.

Yah marrying someone who makes more than you is the way to go. If she wants to get rid of me she will have to pay me off!

and I did not have the only say in the matter (most people just want it done ASAP and don't care about quality).

If anything we made a better decision because we had a consensus and were all on the same page.

Anyone have any tips to convince their wives to go back to school for a medical degree?

Shame them constantly for how little their hobby job contributes relative to their spending.

Or maybe that causes divorce. Hard to say.

You are owning the wrong part of the value curve bro. You need to marry someone AFTER the schooling, not during. I don't know your wife, but you are an okay looking guy, maybe just upgrade?

    what about this situation:

Girl moves in but she has her own house but rents it out to move in with you. The value of both homes go up, would the man be entitled to half of the increase of HER house or is it just the one you two live in?
