Speeding Ticket - Doesn't Make Sense

Red: Denotes my car
Blue: Denotes cop car
Orange: Denotes other cars

I'm driving down this road to proceed to do a left turn. There is traffic and the light is already red to turn left.

Point A: Meanwhile, traffic is moving west to east, and east to west in the picture. I am stopped at the light for 20-30 seconds before the left turn signal is on. During this 20-30 second interval, the cop car which appears to be readying for a right turn, stays still.

Point B: Left turn signal goes green. Cop flashes lights and does a U-turn to pull me over.

He says he did radar to pull me over. He even waved the device in his hand as he walked over.

Question: How could he radar me diagonally across traffic with obstacles (other moving cars) in the way?

Question: Based on where he was set up, wouldn't he be pointing his radar gun towards traffic going west to east? Would that not be the correct way to set up as he could immediately turn right and be behind someone he was pulling over? Who would set up radar like that so they would have to do a U-turn like that?


This doesn't make sense to me at all. This would be the first ticket I've received where I really feel it is worth fighting. If I was speeding, I have always been good with paying the ticket. Thoughts?

Also keep in mind I was having to come to a stop and was clocked going 80 in a 60 zone. I wasn't speeding but if at any point I was, he would've had to "radar" me from even further down the road across diagonal traffic. wtf?

Regardless of whether he is telling the truth or making up a story, you should just simply fight it and put the burden of proof on the officer rather then try and make assumptions about the situation.

If you have the time, its always worth fighting the ticket. Get the details on the ticket to read the officer's notes and then decide if its worth fighting.

Oh and... man up and accept responsibility for your actions!

It's a laser gun and not radar - it's really easy to aim at a specific object.

You might be able to argue that he caught the speed of a different car going west-east, but I'm not entirely sure how that works.

It's certainly weird.

Yea that makes no sense.....80 in a 60, while coming to a stop?

Now consider the Sine error as well, which actually causes a slower reading because of trig (a perpendicular reading would be 0kph) so you might have been going ~90kph if that angle you showed is accurate.


Oh and they dont have MONTHLY quotas - Traffic guys have DAILY quotas.
